Coach Mike Winkeljohn: Carlos Condit did more damage to GSP from the bottom

Carlos Condit no doubt lost his UFC Welterweight title bout with Georges St-Pierre last weekend, but he also fought like the true warrior that he has been his entire career. That loss was in fact his first ever loss in a title fight, having gone 5-0 in his previous bouts with belts on the line. What’s more is that GSP perhaps even looked the worse for wear when compared to Condit, who rocked GSP with a headkick and also attempted to damage him from the guard. From GSP’s post-fight interviews, it looks like he did manage to hurt him, albeit in defeat. Today, Condit’s coach Mike Winkeljohn addressed this, courtesy of MMAMania.com:

“I was definitely impressed with his warrior spirit but I look back at the fight and I know we were losing the fight because Georges was on top, but honestly, look at Georges’ face after . Really, we probably did as much damage if not more from the bottom as Georges did from the top. He was on top controlling and imposing his will. He got the takedown points. In the stand-up, of course, we hurt him more. There’s no doubt Carlos was a great warrior and he was in the game. I’ll tell you what. If we would have had a round or more of that, that would have taken its toll on Georges because we weren’t going anywhere.”

Condit was a game fighter who never quit, and perhaps he was gaining momentum towards the end of the bout. But he was also subject to the relentless takedowns of St-Pierre, who put on a wrestling clinic that raised doubts about Condit’s ability to handle a top-level wrestler. While Condit is great off of his back, he simply could not stop what everyone knew was coming at him. The damage done to GSP’s face shows he can still withstand punishment, and has returned to top form in controlling a fighter as well-versed as Condit. What’s in store for the Welterweight division now, LowKickers? Let me know below, and have a great Thanksgiving!
