UFC Sydney Preliminary Card Results: Ryan Benoit Finishes Askhan Mokhtarian

It’s once again fight day here at LowKickMMA, and the talent on display tonight (Saturday, November 18th, 2017) will come from in the form of UFC Sydney. Headlining the card are Fabricio Werdum and Marcin Tybura, but there’s a whole bunch of great fights also taking place on the preliminary section of the card.

Ryan Benoit vs. Askhan Mokhtarian in a flyweight bout closes the preliminary card on FOX Sports 1. In round 1, Benoit is just following Ashkan around and not able to consistently track him down. Askhan picking away with long range leg kicks. Benoit finally lands a counter 3-2 to a Mokhtarian leg kick. He tries to step in again to counter another kick but he’s out of range. Mohktarian doing a lot of running. They throw hands for the last 10s, Benoit getting in a good hook. Ashkan steps in with a right hand. Benoit glances a kick off Ashkan’s head, then just misses on another. Benoit apparently broke right hand. In round 2, Big head kick partially blocked for Benoit. He tries to step in with a 1-2 then shakes his hand out. Ashkan counters a body kick with a left. Counter left hook for Mohktarian, then a leg kick. Benoit presses forward but unable to find the distance. They trade lefts and Mohktarian turns and runs and Benoit pursues him but misses on the haymaker left. Ashkan ducks under and pushes off. Benoit goes for a takedown late and lands some nice lefts as Ashkan tries to get up. In round 3, Ashkan partially lands a spinning back fist. A head kick lands for Benoit and Mohktarian is out.

Will Brooks vs. Nik Lentz is next in a lightweight bout. In round 1, Lentz landing kicks and the occasional hook. Brooks is the first to change levels but is caught up in a guillotine. Lentz has him in guard briefly but sweeps as soon as Brooks passes. Left uppercut for Brooks answered by right hook for Lentz. 1-2 for Brooks but he eats a hard right from Lentz. Lentz is behind Brooks against the cage, landing knees. Brooks turns to face, hits his own knee, and shoves out. In round 2, Lentz isn’t pressing the wrestling as much as I expected. He’s kicking and winging punches reasonably well but getting outpointed by Brooks’ faster hands. Brooks lands a trip but is ensnared in a guillotine! Lentz rolls to mount and gets the tap

Rashad Coulter vs. Tai Tuivasa in a heavyweight bout. In round 1, Tuivasa lands hard shots on the cage. Coulter surviving so far but Tuivasa chops him down with a leg kick. Flying knee that knocks out Culter for the win.

Damien Brown vs. Frank Camacho in a lightweight bout opens the FOX Sports 1 preliminary card. In round 1, Brown counters a right to the body with an overhand upstairs. Camacho pressuring, he throws a 3-2 that doesn’t quite connect clean. Brown finally gets a trip then jumps on the back and slaps on the choke immediately. Camacho defends two tight choke attempts. Brown had the arm under the chin but Camacho able to pull the second arm down and roll over to top. In round 2, Camacho slams a couple hard jabs into Brown’s mug, but eats a left hook. Both guys looking a bit tired but still throwing. Right for Camacho lands multiple times. Brown hits a hard leg kick and throws back but Camacho rolling with it and delivering hard counters. Right lands for Brown, then 3-2, then a pair of leg kicks. Hard 1-2 connects flush for Camacho. Camacho staying in Brown’s face but his chin holding up so far. A brief clinch battle gives Brown a respite. He lands a flush right but eats a two-piece for his trouble.In round 3, Brown tries a vicious downward step-in elbow that glances. Brown landing better so far this round. Hook kick lands for Brown but Camacho is feeding him knuckle sandwiches again and again. Non-stop fisticuffs. Left hook then a cross lands for Brown. They wing and land bombs down the stretch non-stop. Camacho picked up the decision win.

Alex Chambers vs. Nadia Kassem in a women’s strawweight bout finishes off the UFC Fight Pass preliminary card. In round 1, Kassem comes out flashing kicks but Chambers ducks under and gets the takedown. Kassem wall-walks this time but Chambers tries a standing head-and-arm choke. Kassem pulls out and throws punches and kicks but she’s not keeping the distance at all. In round 2, Chambers clinches again. Punches and elbows off her back for Kassem. She starts working on the arm again, goes belly down again but can’t get the sub. She is able to sweep to top finally. In round 3, Left kick, 1-2 for Kassem, then leg kicks. Chambers tries to clinch but absorbs a knee to the gut. Chambers doesn’t look like she has anything left. Kassem is trying to work subs off her back again, shut down so far by Chambers. Chambers stands over Kassem, comes back down into guard. Kassem working on a leg again and uses it this time to get on top. Hard ground and pound for Kassem but she lets Chambers get to her knees and clinch up. Kassem got the decision win.

Jenel Lausa vs. Eric Shelton is next in a flyweight bout. In round 1, Shelton has a high kick blocked. They trade right hands as Lausa pushes forward. Now the Filipino sends a body kick off Shelton’s arms. Shelton has a high kick blocked. They trade right hands as Lausa pushes forward. Now the Filipino sends a body kick off Shelton’s arms. Shelton tries to keep his body weight on Lausa as the Filipino tries to wall walk but he can’t keep him down. Lausa stuffs the follow up shot. In round 2, Lausa wings a right at Shelton. Shelton pressuring Lausa toward the fence and he shoots as Lausa tries to circle off. Full guard for Shelton now and he drops hard right hands on Lausa’s mug. Now lefts. Now working the body and head. In round 3, Lausa’s back is once again on the cage. He misses an uppercut and eats a Shelton overhand. Shelton sends a right down the pipe before shooting in and pulling Lausa down on the fence. Shelton resumes his active ground and pound from guard. Lausa up with 20 seconds left. They wing shots at each other but Lausa gets sat back by a left hand. Shelton got the decision win.

Opening the UFC Fight Pass prelims is Anthony Hamilton vs. Adam Wieczorek in a heavyweight bout. In round 1, Hamilton scores with a right hand down the pipe early. Wiz comes back with a body kick and leg kick. Hamilton shoots, clinches. Hamilton gets the takedown, pulling Wieczorek off the cage as he does. He’s in half guard, working the body. Hamilton passes to side control and continues working Wieczorek’s body with punches. The Pole gets back to half but is offering little off his back. Wieczorek gets butterfly guard and forces Hamilton to stand but the American grabs the ankles and passes to side. The process repeats. In round 2, Wieczorek forces an off-balanced Hamilton to the floor with punches. Wieczorek on top in half guard. Hamilton’s gas tank doesn’t look good. Wieczorek uses his long arms to drop short elbows on Hamilton’s mug. He threatens to mount but Hamilton scrambles and nearly has his neck taken but escapes. Wiz misses on a head kick as Hamilton stands. Right hand for Hamilton lands. Hamilton checks a low kick and flicks out one of his own. Hamilton catches a body kick and follows it into the clinch. He pushes Wiz into the cage but gets quickly reversed. In round 3, Hamilton continues working on a takedown but can’t get it. Wieczorek breaks off. Hamilton tries a head kick, eats a right. Hamilton follows another right into a clinch once more. He eats a knee but Wiz soon circles out. Hamilton tries a knee of his own on the break. Hamilton hits a body kick but absorbs another knee. Hamilton shoots but stuffed again. He breaks off and tries throwing hands at the bell.  Wieczorek got the decision win.
