UFC Lightweight Champion Ilia Topuria Addresses Domestic Abuse Allegations and Claims of Extortion

Ilia Topuria, the UFC lightweight and former featherweight champion, issued a statement on December 15, 2025, denying allegations of domestic abuse and claiming he has been subjected to threats and financial extortion. The 28-year-old announced the statement through his official Instagram account, providing details of the circumstances that led him to step away from defending his title through the first quarter of 2026.

According to Topuria’s statement, he has been targeted by threats involving false allegations of domestic abuse linked to financial demands. The fighter stated that he was pressured with threats to disseminate allegations unless financial demands were met, characterizing these allegations as entirely unfounded. Topuria emphasized that evidence forms the basis of truth, not opinion, and indicated he has preserved documentation of the situation. The materials he referenced include audio recordings, written communications, witness statements, and video material, all of which have been submitted to judicial authorities.

The statement comes following Topuria‘s October separation from his wife, Giorgina Uzcategui Badell, a Venezuelan businesswoman and mother of his daughter. Signs of their split became visible when Uzcategui unfollowed Topuria on Instagram in mid-October and removed posts related to the fighter from her account. Following the separation, Topuria was photographed with Keta Rostomashvili, an entrepreneur and co-founder of a beauty studio based in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Topuria announced in late November that he would not compete during the first quarter of 2026, citing personal circumstances without initially providing specific details. He granted the UFC permission to organize necessary matchups during his absence, leading the promotion to schedule an interim lightweight championship bout between Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett for UFC 324 on January 24, 2026. Later, Topuria approved of the interim title fight arrangement, explaining that he had discussed his situation with UFC leadership beforehand.

In his statement, Topuria addressed his initial silence on the matter, explaining that he sought to protect his children, who are his primary concern. However, he reconsidered this approach, concluding that silence allowed false narratives to persist. He referenced other individuals who have faced similar circumstances, noting that legal systems have historically clarified facts in such situations. Topuria stated that he is stepping forward to demonstrate that people should not surrender to intimidation or manipulation.

The fighter stated that evidence has been submitted to judicial authorities to pursue legal action for attempted extortion, falsification of evidence, misappropriation of funds and personal property, and multiple threats. He asserted that those familiar with him can verify his commitment to discipline and integrity, and that he has never engaged in violence. Topuria expressed confidence in the judicial process to determine facts based on evidence.

Topuria concluded by announcing he would not make further public statements regarding the matter, requesting that speculation be avoided and his family’s privacy be respected during the legal proceedings. The statement contained the phrase: “The truth does not require volume – it requires facts.”

Full statement:

Over the past several weeks, I have made the difficult decision to temporarily step away from defending my title. This was not a decision I took lightly. However, when circumstances arise that threaten your personal integrity, your family, and your reputation, there comes a point when you must address them directly.

“In recent months, I have been subjected to severe and unacceptable pressure, including threats to disseminate false allegations of domestic abuse unless financial demands were met. These allegations are entirely unfounded. The truth is not a matter of opinion—it is a matter of evidence.

All relevant evidence has been carefully preserved and documented, including audio recordings, written communications, witness statements, and video material. This evidence has been submitted to the appropriate judicial authorities in order to pursue legal action for attempted extortion, falsification of evidence, misappropriation of funds and personal property, and multiple threats.

My initial decision to remain silent was solely to protect my children, who are the most important part of my life. However, I have come to understand that silence, under these circumstances, does not protect the truth—it allows false narratives to take hold.

Many individuals have faced similar situations, and time and again the legal system has ultimately clarified the facts. Today, I am stepping forward not only for my family and myself, but also to demonstrate that no one should be forced to yield to intimidation, manipulation, or fear.

Those who know me can attest that I have never engaged in violence of any kind, and that my life and career have always been guided by discipline, respect, and integrity. I have full confidence in the judicial process and will allow the legal system to determine the facts based on evidence.

Out of respect for my children and the ongoing legal proceedings, I will not be making any further public statements. I respectfully ask that speculation be avoided and that my family’s privacy be honored during this sensitive time. The truth does not require volume – it requires facts.”
