UFC 153 came at us live from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and delivered some great fights and finishes for the fans. Longtime reigning champion Anderson Silva did not fail to deliver as he finished Stephan Bonnar via TKO towards the end of the first round. Bonnar tried to push the smaller Silva up against the cage and attempt a takedown, but the champ's defense was just too good. Although Bonnar landed some shots, they never seemed to faze The Spider, who landed a vicious knee to the body and rained down some punches to seal the deal. Kudos to both fighters for stepping up on short notice to put on a show for the fans. Although Silva has stated he will not face Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones, many will be calling for this fight to go down.

In other action, Antonio “Big Nog” Nogueira proved that jiujitsu does indeed work when he fought a back-and-forth Heavyweight battle with Dave Herman. Herman scored a few nice tosses and landed some kicks early on, but the tables were turned in the second round. Big Nog landed a clean left hook to drop Herman and followed to the ground for some submission attempts. Although unsuccessful at first, Nogueira was able to secure a fight-ending armbar to hand Herman his first submission loss ever.

Jon Fitch silenced his doubters when he slowed the hype train of Erick Silva down with a dominating unanimous decision victory. It appeared Fitch was repeatedly trying to finish the fight, something he has been deriding for not doing lately.

Glover Teixeira fought Fabio Maldonado in a brutal war, landing tons of effective elbows from top position. Maldonado used his vaunted boxing, but it was not nearly enough to stop the respected all-around skills of Teixeira. Although Maldonado was willing to continue, the doctor called for a stoppage after the second round. Phil Davis' rematch with Wagner Prado went much better the second time around, as he finished the fight with an impressive Anaconda choke. Demian Maia returned to his bread and butter in submitting Rick Story with a rear-naked choke, his first tapout in nearly four years.

LowKick.com Fight Night Awards:

Performance of the Night: Anderson Silva gets the nod here for stepping up a weight class on short notice to destroy a man who had never been finished before in the UFC in Stephan Bonnar.

Finish of the Night: Big Nog earns the well-deserved award for his impressive finish of David Herman in his comeback fight from arm surgery. He proved that BJJ is very effective against an opponent who doubted its worth.

Company Man Steven Boner takes a dive as expected! Another fixed fight to make Anderson Silva look good. Typical Zuffa tactics.

You're right. Another pro fighter that looks amateur when fighting Silva. Who cares if Bonnar is a so-called can? Everyone turns "can" when you fight the GOAT.

Silva should have fought Weidman or someone in the top 3....

    Straight JOKE......

Now he wants to fight GSP...the smaller welterweight....

Silva knows its hard to move up in wieght and fight at the same high level...

Notice how Silva didnt say he wanted to fight Jones, which meant he needs to move up in weight....heaver/slower/cardio = a** kicking

In about a year, Silva is gonna smash Weidman. Then everyone's gonna say Weidman was never good. He's a can. Then its gonna be another hype guy. Then when Silva smashes everyone, including Bones, and retires by the age of 43. They'll still say he's overrated. Same cycle since 2006, when the GOAT was crowned. Sorry for the rant. I'm high as ****.

ulikebang, you're absolutely right. Until Anderson beats a real contender such as Weidman and beats Jon Jones at LHW, there will be a lingering doubt about Anderson Silva.. A fight with GSP is still a super-fight, in my opinion. This is a fight that needs to happen before Jon Jones, obviously.

"Until he beats a real contender"

Are you kidding me, people were somehow saying Dan Henderson would beat Jones, you know, the same guy Anderson beat when he was younger, or how bout Vitor, the same guy who came closer to anyone had to defeating Jones, or how bout Chael, twice, cause you know, Anderson was scared to fight him just like he is Weidman. Even Forest was able to beat Rampage and Shogun and Anderson made him look like a child.

If a much bigger and stronger Bonnar couldn't take him down, what hope will GSP have in a fight against Andy? Rogan's right, the only superfight that makes sense for Silva is against Jones.

@WARBj Yes I do think GSP's wrestling is better in MMA.

GSP has taken down with ease guys like Koscheck, Hughes and Shields... while Sonnen only has an easy time with Stann and gets stuffed by Bisping and Silva (I'll admit he did good against Okami).

GSP is also so much better at passing the guard

it doesnt matter what people think about skills...GSP will not take that fight at least for another year or more....

He is smart and knows the consequences of going up in weight. Only an idiot does that, especially when there is a title on the line. Moving up in weight needs to be done with time, training, diet, to make sure the right type of weight is being put on the body coupled with keeping the speed, power, athleticism. Guys have done it before and they only diminished in performance...

it would still be a disadvantage to the smaller guy. Moving up is far more difficult than moving down. Besides the comparison in Height, weight would make more sense AS vs JJ... Even Dana figured that out...

Stuffed by Silva? Are you high? Did you not watch their fights?

Bisping did a good job and stuffing SOME of his takedowns.

You are relying on GSP to hump Anderson's leg for 5 rounds.

I am relying on Anderson landing one strike on GSP's chin.

Fitch did awesome in that fight and humbled Silva. In a rematch this is what would happen to Hendricks. Hendricks was lucky. Fitch is still number 2 in reality. He is a beast and watching his opponents get dragged into his war is like watching a struggling prey try and escape. The look on each of his opponents faces by R3 is horror in that they feel helpless. Fitch is a 5 round fighter and his opponents are usually just in the last legs of their ability to survive at end of R3. Penn and Silva are great examples. GSP has said many times his current opponent is his toughest opponent but when asked in an interview of hall he had fought he said John Fitch with no hesitation.

Big Nog didn't look great but he did what he had to and as usual Herman looks like he wasn't bothered about winning or losing the fight.

Glover is a killer - a machine in all areas and just doesn't stop. I hope he keeps his hands up more when he fights a top opponent. Maldonado showed some super heart and chin, despite being in a fight which should have been stopped at the first break.

Erick Silva will be back better than ever, IMO he still has champ potential it's just he ran in to a hungry Jon Fitch at the wrong point in his career. Goldie was right hopefully he does a GSP and improves tenfold after his first UFC loss.

Davis put on a grappling clinic and is back in my top 10, ever improving. Wagner didn't really show anything, hopefully he gets an easier second fight.

Maia is BACK and so is his world class Jits. Be interesting to see how that wrestler stacked division deals with him. Creepiest sub I've seen - Sub via Neck Crank modified nose bleed

Herman looked pretty bad last night. Some of his performances have left me with the impression he had potential to be much better than he is rated but last night he was static with little aggression. Glad Nog subbed him in Brazil though. His smack talk about Jitz not working on him came back to haunt him. I hope Herman gets better training because I do believe he can be much better than what he showed last night. He has great variety of striking when he's in the mood but he needs to be far more aggressive for it to pay off.

Thanks to Eric Silva, Fitch was actually in a somewhat entertaining fight. Unfortunately, the wrong man won that fight.

Maldonado is a tough dude. Glover Teixeira, on the hand, is a beast.

The wrong man won Fitch-Silva? I'm not a Fitch fan (in fact he's one of my least favorite fighters), but he completely out-fought Silva. He didn't stall and actually fought a great fight; he may have made a career out of being boring as fvck, but when he gives us a good fight, we should give him credit.

I agree, Fitch definitely stepped up his aggression and activity for this match. But I've always maintained that people finding Fitch's fights boring has to do with opponents being unable or unwilling to fight off their backs. They're normally afraid to do anything for fear that Jon Fitch will advance position, pound them, or go for a sub. As long as they just try to hold position, Fitch is willing to stay on top and win the fight. Erick Silva was not afraid of him. At all. I was really impressed by his ability to tangle with Fitch on the ground and try to beat him at his own game. If Silva gets a bigger gas tank, that guy's going places.

I thought Fitch was the performance of the night. That rear naked was sunk in tight yet he fought through it and dominated for the rest of the fight. Another performance like that against a top 5 and he should fight GSP again.

PS: What a superb card. This card could have carried itself without Silva stepping up. I don't know this recent mindset the UFC has of having to have a superstar headliner on every event. There's so many great fighters, the cards should sell themselves regardless.

Nobody is stopping Anderson Silva man not even Bones... he basically LET Bonnar throw all he had at him for 4 minutes (while andersons corner got furious cause he was simply NOT fighting back and anderson just told him to chill.. "I got this") Then at WILL he unleashed and FINISHED Bonnar in extraordinaire fashion. One of the toughest if not THE toughest guys in the UFC from a higher weightclass who came in in TOP shape and he just handed him the FIRST finish in his career. Look at the ANIMALS Bonnar fought in the past 7 years (including Bones). Silva just showed the world ONCE AGAIN.. nobody is ****ing with him anytime soon and the GSP fight dont make no mo'fuccing sense!! He'll KILL George!! He needs to beat up Bones and RETIRE!! Let the new kids play.... !!

Why would Silva call out a guy in a lower weight division? GSP has never fought in Middle weight in, his career. So to me personally I think Silva calling our GSP is really doing anything for his reputation.. Silva and Jones makes more sense. Silva has 3 LHW fight under his belt now so I don't see why he would not fight the LHW champion, but rather call out a WW champion coming off a long term injury.

This is clearly the truth, but GSP is a safe fight for Silva, he'll get a great deal of credit for much less risk than a fight with Jones. The UFC will make it happen though, only a matter of time. I think that Anderson will get over his wonderful friendship and beat Jones in what may be the last fight of his illustrious career.

Ok just to start things off I am a MASSIVE Silva fan and love watching him fight. I loved this fight, seeing the matrix style from Anderson again!

However I have just been watching it again and starting to worry that it may have been a fix.

Re watching the fight it seemed to me like Bonnar was saying things to Anderson. Like watch at 2.31, he clearly lifts his head and whispers something to Silva, then just after Anderson shoulder barges him and throws a knee.

Little things like this were happening throughout the fight and Bonnar was clinching and hiding his head down, to say things!

Also look at 0.42 to 0.32 Bonnar is tentatively clinching with him and very close together and it looks like he is saying what to do next and Anderson easily spins him around (like Bonnar is allowing it) and then trips him and does the finish!

I have seen this sorta of thing with Cro Cop and Dos Santos and also Cro Cop and Frank Mir. This grappling and talking stuff!!

I really hope its not a fix as I love watching Anderson but now I wonder........does anyone else see what I see??
