UFC 148 Conference Call Audio: Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen engage in "War of Words"

Today the UFC 148 media conference call took place and had some great quotes from the combatants involved, as well as some comments from Dana White. Of course the always entertaining Chael Sonnen was on hand to spread his word, and the UFC Middleweight challenger also spoke out against his longtime rival. Normally we do not see Anderson Silva become so animated about an opponent, it appears this fight has become personal for him. Some of his actual translations were quite intense and vocal, to say the least. Silva had the following quotes about the blockbuster UFC 148 main event:

“Chael is a criminal. He's been convicted of crimes. He doesn't deserve to be in the Octagon. When the time is right, I'm going to break his face and break every one of his teeth in his mouth.”

“I don't live in the past. The things in the past are in museums. Playtime is over. I'm gonna beat Chael like he's never been beat before. There's no more talking. I'm going to beat his ass out of the UFC. He's never gonna want to fight again after I'm done with him.” - via MMAMania.com

Some very strong words from the longtime reigning champion, who is normally quite reserved in his dealings with the public. This would seem to be fueled by the constant, berating trash talk given by Sonnen, who did not stop the trend today and said:

“All that happened was Anderson found himself in a fight for the first time. His skills are amateur. If you walk into a fight with your fists down, that's amateur. I treated him like an amateur the first time and I'll treat him like an amateur this time.”

“The stakes are pretty high on this one. It's not like I'm trying to score points on the guy, he's trying to do damage to me.”

“I've got two words for Anderson Silva: medium rare.”

Lastly Dana White had his own comments on the perceived success of the summer's biggest card, and weighed in on the fans turning on Clay Guida last Friday:

“There's no doubt that we expect over 1 million buys here. We expect UFC 100 numbers.”

“It's unfortunate that these guys were involved in a sport where you're only as good as your last fight. For Clay Guida, he was a star until the third round of that fight and everyone turned on him and started cheering for Gray. It's a crazy sport.”

Some entertaining words from two great fighters and the UFC President, fueling the fire in hope that UFC 148 will be one of the best events ever. Is Chael Sonnen inside the calm champion's head? If so, can he use this to his advantage and deal The Spider his first-ever UFC loss?

Anger can give you strength or it can make you sloppy. In the case of a cerebral, calculating fighter like Anderson, anger is usually not a good thing. I am rooting for AS and have him in the picks but I really hope he is able to leave his anger outside of the cage.

He is quiet to anyone who isnt in his circle, but dont mistake that for humility.

But he has been dominant for years so cant blame him for not being humble.

You do not seem to know what humble is nor did the other people who sharped you lol.... not talking shit doesnt mean you are humble. Just means you dont talk shit....or you might be respectful... but he isnt respectful during fights, which is where the colors shine through for a fighter.

Look at how he clowned Maia in the 1st 3 rounds. He was yelling at him to brawl with him.

Then 3 rounds later he is running away and hiding behind the ref.

He clowned Forrest as well really badly. Disrespecting his opponent. Doing things only a ****y fighter would do.

But again, he has every right to be ****y, nobody has been able to touch his skills (except for Sonnen)

He wasn't disrespectful to Forest. He was just so much better than Forest that it makes one feel bad for the guy. I've got nothing on the Maia fight though. That was just weird.

I really don't see what difference this makes. Chael already knew he was going to step into the octagon with a man who was going to try to hurt him. It doesn't really matter if he says it or not.

So I don't know what's going through Chael's mind now, but I imagine it's not a whole lot different then whatever was going through it before.

On the other hand, if a fighter has ever succeeded in getting in another fighters head, Chael has done it now.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Chael's biggest weapon against Anderson Silva is a double leg take down. This doesn't work nearly as well if Anderson is dancing in and out countering off of Chael's punches. Chael's double does work very well though if Anderson is agressively moving forward.

Chael doesn't mean the rude things he says. He's not hyping the fight. He's just employing his strategy. He's let us believe he is being funny but he wants Anderson PISSED off. Charging forward. Boom. Take down. Everytime Anderson seemed to not be bothered Chael had to amp it up further.

I was very worried Anderson was cool and calm and working on TDD. Now that he is angry...his odds of winning are diminished. Silva fans think "Anderson's angry - Chael is in trouble". I think "Anderson's angry - Anderson's in trouble".

it all depends on his own mentality, maybe if he gets mad he focuses more on landing hit and making them count or maybe not..no one really knows till the fight starts...if you watch the "like water" doc you see how he told Nog he was going to Submit Chael, and he did...this time his pretty much saying his going to KO him...we'll see...

Pretty sure Anderson knows everything you said, seeing as he has been fighting for years now. A more likely situation is he studied the he'll out of chael and will brutally knock him out. Like vitor.

I agree that is the most likely thing.

I was not actually addressing who was going to win. I was simply saying that Chael wanted Anderson angry and it took him a long time to achieve it but he finally has done it. This will help him.

Regarding your statement that "a more likely situation is he studied the hell out of Chael ...Either (1) Anderson studied Chael the first time, knew about the take down and couldn't stop him or (2) Anderson underestimated Chael. Which mistake did Anderson make? ; )

Or he knew chael had great cardio, played possum for several rounds and stuck a triangle on him exactly like he said. It's almost more sinister to give chael the belief he is winning just to snatch it in the end. He didn't look all that beat up at the end.

He is good enough to do that, he did say he would submit chael before the fight (for making fun of noguira). Did he do that I dont know. But it is a third possibility.

I agree, if Anderson can't control his emotion in the cage then it will be a dissadvantage but I feel he likely can as in his fight with Vitor. Chael has taken it to another level though so maybe it will not be good for Anderson.

movescamp, Anderson Silva did not play possum for 5 rounds and at the last second throw a triangle up as his strategy.... anyone who believes this is a straight up moron.

Silva submitted Chael in the last second because he is one of the best fighters of all time, and even in the adversity and domination that Sonnen had displayed for 23 minutes, STILL found a way to win.

And I am a Sonnen fan before a Silva fan.

Entity, I know this is an MMA site, but If you knew about the NFL, you would know where the name "Cheatie" came from. "Cheatie" is what some New York Jets fans like myself used to call the New England Patriots fans after Spygate. Yes, Like Chael, they did cheat in the past.

Hes not the most vicious man alive. I know people who would rip his throat out with their teeth. This is a sport with rules.

No, you know guys that are dumb enough to try that and end up beaten to death by a master martial artist who happens to compete in a sport with rules as a job.

I like the chicken dance. It's hilarious to watch old ladies do it at weddings.

Chael is a criminal. He's been convicted of crimes. He doesn't deserve to be in the Octagon.Words from a scared Chicken

Yeah, I have to admit, with what AS has done at MW he really should go up. The only person to give him any trouble was Chael and unless this fight proves me wrong I am calling that a one in a million fluke. Not only that but the two times he fought LHWs he destroyed them and one of the MWs he finished has been wrecking guys at LHW and is fighting for the title.

He did. Twice. Knocked both guys TFO. They weren't sharks in the LHD, but they weren't scrubs either.

Its lyrics from the DMX song that Silva walks out to, but its using some racial words so it will be deleted.

My bad. Maybe I didn't proofread well enough first. Didn't mean to cross the line. Just hyped about the fight, and Silva's walkout has to be #1 all time IMO.

Chael is lucky Rosenthal was the ref and not Mazagatti. If Mazagatti were in there, Silva would have ripped Chael's arm off by the time Mazagatti would have woken up and stepped in. And Chael says he tapped because of the triangle. BS. He tapped because he was about to lose half his arm. Not to mention, he played dumb after the stoppage thinking he might be able to get away with it and play it off. How bush league is that? Way to keep it classy Chael.
