Daniel Cormier Says Jon Jones Will Get Beat Up By Cain Velasquez

UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones has spoke recently about a possible move to heavyweight; the lanky 205-pound boss will only make the limit for so long, before being forced to fight at his more natural weight. A super fight with Cain Velasquez would be on the cards if ‘Bones’ and the current heavyweight kingpin still reign by that time.

Velasquez trains over at AKA, and his team mate Daniel Cormier has dropped to light-heavyweight to avoid having to fight his stable mate. DC was scheduled to face Rashad Evans before ‘Suga’ was injured and replaced by Pat Cummins at UFC 170. DC spoke recently to Fox Sports about a potential Jones vs. Velasquez scrap:

“”I always say this and this whole Jon Jones thing has been blown out of proportion.  I care about being the champion, so if Jon decides to go to heavyweight, he can go up there and get beat up by Cain (Velasquez).  That’s the only thing that’s going to happen,””

“Cause there won’t ever be a two belt thing because I don’t think any of these guys are going to beat Velasquez.  If he was going to leave the division, I wish he would have did it already so the only reason I’d have to fight Rashad would be for the title.  It didn’t work out that way so if he left, I’d fight whoever had the belt.”

Jones fighting in the higher weight division has a lot of interesting factors, the first being whether he can take the hits from the big boys. Cormier will not get the satisfaction of facing the former light-heavyweight champ Evans at 170, and I hope his bout with Cummins is at least slightly competitive.

“The UFC seems to want to do Gustafsson, I’ll beat (Jon) Jones and how much better would it be to promote a fight where he’s trying to get his belt back rather than promoting a guy who just fought him close.”

DC was so small for a heavyweight, although it didn’t seem to matter when knocking out Bigfoot Silva or tossing around Josh Barnett in the Strikeforce Grand Prix. Confident in his skills and unbeaten as a pro, Cormier still needs a big name on his resume from lhw, and Cummins is not that name.
