Rising UFC lightweights Bobby Green and Jorge Masvidal both picked up huge wins at last Saturday night’s (July 26, 214) UFC on FOX 12 from the SAP Center in San Jose, California.
The California-born “King” picked up what ranks as the biggest win of his career when he outpointed hometown favorite Josh Thomson, shooting him up six spots in the rankings to No. 7. Green sits with an impressive 4-0 record in the Octagon.
Meanwhile, former Strikeforce title challenger Masvidal put an end to talented striker Daron Cruickshank’s surge, defeating “The Detroit Superstar” with a dominating decision. The No. 14-ranked “Gamebred” ran his UFC record to 4-1 in the process, his only loss coming to tough No. 11-ranked Rustam Khabilov.
Now, the two talented fighters’ paths are set to cross at September 27’s UFC 178 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena. It’s a pivotal bout that will give the winner prime bargaining position in one of them most stacked divisions in the sport. With long-injured champion Anthony Pettis finally returning to defend the title against Gilbert Melendez at UFC 181 on December 6, Green and Masvidal will throw down with dire implications on the line.
UFC 178 features a light heavyweight title grudge match between champion Jon Jones and newly booked No. 1 contender Daniel Cormier. The blockbuster card also boasts the awaited returns of Dominick Cruz and No. 1-ranked women’s bantamweight Cat Zingano.
