Josh Thomson Is Ready To Fight Again After UFC On Fox 10, With Or Without Anthony Pettis

(woooooaaaaaa we’re half way theeerrrreeee)

Josh Thomson has a big opportunity ahead of him at tonight’s UFC on Fox 10; the former Strikeforce Lightweight champion will face the former UFC equivalent and a title shot is what its worth to ‘The Punk’. UFC President Dana White commented on Thomson’s next bout, should he get past Bendo:

“Here’s the reality: If Thomson wins, he’s the next in line,” White said. “Obviously Ben Henderson just lost very decisively in his last fight with (Pettis). Should Benson Henderson win, we’ll see what’s up with (Melendez).”

Thomson was already slated to face champ Anthony Pettis, before ‘Showtime’ was again sidelined with another knee injury. ‘Smooth’ needs to make a big impression in this fight, although it looks like Thomson is very focused, as he spoke with MMAJunkie:

“I’m over it. I’ve got, obviously, I think, bigger fish to fry,” Thomson said. “Benson poses more of a threat. He’s more well-rounded. There’s more to him that I have to worry about. With Pettis, I don’t have much to worry about.”

“It’s just a fight. I didn’t need this fight to get a title shot — I already had it. But what are you going to do? You need to fight, and I’m ready to fight again, right after (Fox 10) if Pettis isn’t ready”

Thomson is a very game character, willing to gamble his title shot to stay active. It is refreshing to see in MMA when a guy would rather fight than sit out for extended periods to get a shot. It has gone wrong for many in the past, and ring rust alone can cost you your chances in those kind of big fights.

“He fights like me,” Thomson said. “This sport was created for this purpose right here. It’s not a one-dimensional fight.”

I don’t think Hendo vs. Thomson will be one dimensional at all; the fight has every chance of being FOTN, mainly due to the incredibly high work rate associated with the two scrappers involved. Both guys seem very motivated, which is always a good sign

For Henderson, its about getting back to the top of his game and Thomson will look to overcome the biggest hurdle of his pro career, en route to the next one; A UFC Lightweight title shot.
