Conor McGregor Teases Featherweight Return: Sh** Will Hit The Fan
Following the conclusion of his thrilling UFC 202 five-round main event welterweight war with Nate Diaz yesterday (August 20, 2016), the king of the UFC’s 145-pound weight class may be set to return to defend his throne after having yet to defend the strap since winning it this past December.
During the post-fight media scrum following the thrilling event, McGregor was asked about his thoughts on returning to his championship weight where interim champ Jose Aldo awaits for his own shot at redemption after suffering a devastating 13-second knockout to the Irish phenom:
“How long was I going back and forth with Jose? That must have been a two-year build-up, he pulled out last minute, I continued to fight someone else, then we rescheduled. A two-year, round-the-world deal with that boy, and then he stepped in and I beat him in 13 seconds.
“It’s hard for me to get excited about that. Especially after his last performance, it was a decision, he didn’t go out and get it like I wanted him to get it. Look, we’ll see; I’m the 145-pound champion. The interim 145-pound champion is a man that I KO’d in 13 seconds.
“I’ve got to figure out what’s next, but right now I don’t know what’s next. There’s many things in the pipeline, so sit tight.”
Shortly following the bout UFC President Dana White told ESPN that if McGregor failed to defend his title in his next contest under the UFC banner, he will be stripped of the belt.
‘The Notorious One’, however, does not believe the promotion would do such a thing, as it makes no sense and would damage the division’s marketability:
“I don’t think they’re gonna do that, I mean how can they? If they’re gonna do that–if they want to give my belt to the guy I KO’d in 13 seconds, and bury that division in the prelims or the Fight Pass stuff, cause that’s what they’re gonna do.
“We’ll see. How could they do that? What would that do to the division if the guy I KO’d in 13 seconds is the unified champion? We’ve got a lot to talk about. I’m in a beautiful position right now, that was built through hard work and I’m going to capitalize on that.
“Again, we’ll see. There is a lot in the pipeline. Sh** is about to hit the fan I feel. So we’ll see.”
