He’s still MMA’s biggest name, but Conor McGregor’s return to the cage (or ring) is currently unknown. ”The Notorious’ one has been rumored to be returning against fellow fan favorite Donald Cerrone this year, but negotiations have supposedly hit a proverbial wall. While he waits for his next fight to become official, it’s apparently time McGregor reflects on some of his biggest fights.

The former two-division champ teased a potential rematch with Floyd Mayweather in the boxing ring earlier today. It just doesn’t seem all that likely it will happen. But there is another high-profile fight he could most likely get more easily, and it’s arguably a better fight.

That fight is his oft-rumored rematch with longtime rival Nate Diaz. McGregor suffered his first UFC loss to Diaz back at 2016’s UFC 196. The Irishman looked back on his impromptu bout with Diaz on social media in the wee hours of this morning:

“What a sequence! One of the craziest fights ever. Also the birth of McGregor FAST!

“The rematch was voted the greatest fight in UFC history.

“My last one was a small bit wild also haha I love this game. This is my 3rd level of income at this point. I just do it because I love it.”

McGregor rematched Diaz in the following August, where they rematched each other at UFC 202. The card was the highest-selling pay-per-view of all-time.

A trilogy bout has been rumored ever since, yet Diaz has remained inactive. McGregor has only two fights in the Octagon himself. He beat Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title at UFC 205 that November, took the next two years off while boxing Mayweather, and lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov in his MMA return at UFC 229 last year.

‘Notorious’ is reportedly headed for a bout with ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone. Talks have supposedly cooled off significantly, however.

Despite both of the fighters’ inactivity, the bout would be a highly lucrative main event nonetheless. With the UFC purportedly looking for other fights for Cerrone, this could be the way they go.
