Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos, the champion of Strikeforce’s 145 pound women’s division has been suspended by the California State Athletic Commission after her drug test following her December 17 fight against Hiroko Yamanaka came back positive for stanozolol.

Stanozolol is a synthetic anabolic steroid that is very similar to testosterone.

According to Bloodyelbow.com, the suspension is retroactive to December 16, 2011 and her 16 second knockout win over Yamanaka will be changed to a no contest.  Santos will also be fined $2,500 for the positive test.

Santos does have the right to appeal the suspension of her license.  At this time it is unclear how long the suspension will be for.

Official California State Athletic Commision press release:

CALIFORNIA STATE ATHLETIC COMMISSION SUSPENDS LICENSE OF FIGHTER CRISTIANE JUSTINO SANTOS - a.k.a. CRIS CYBORG

Mixed Martial Arts fighter tested positive for anabolic steroid in December 16, 2011 test

The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) has suspended the license of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Cristiane Justino Santos, better known in MMA circles as Cris Cyborg, and has fined her $2,500 as the result of a positive test for a banned substance.

Santos' December 16, 2011 drug test came back positive for stanozolol metabolites. CSAC learned of the test results December 23, 2011 and suspended Santos's license, with the suspension applied retroactively to December 16, 2011. In accordance with Rule 368, the result of her last fight between Hiroko Yamanaka will be changed to a "No Decision".

"Our primary concern is for the health and safety of fighters," said CSAC Executive Officer George Dodd. "Anabolic agents and other banned substances put not only the users of those agents at risk, but their opponents as well. The commission simply will not tolerate their use."

The use of certain substances, including anabolic steroids, is prohibited under the Commission's regulations, and CSAC has among the toughest drug testing standards of any Athletic Commission in the country. It is the only commission that requires urine samples to be taken in the presence of a commission representative prior to a bout.

Santos's provision of a urine sample was observed by a CSAC representative and the sample was sent to the World Anti-doping Agency test facility at the University of California, Los Angeles. Santos has the right to appeal the suspension of her license.

This news is a huge blow to the Strikeforce women’s division as Santos was quickly becoming the most well known (active) female missed martial artist.

Huge blow for WMMA. The face and 'Anderson Silva' of WMMA who seemed amazing, unbeatable and really justified to the doubters that WMMA is serious got popped for steriods or cheating in other terms.

It's a real shame, if the verdict stays this way then women have even less chance of getting into the UFC for a long time. Even though without Cyborg it evens the playing field, the playing field's bar has just dropped hugely.

But Cyborg didn't even need to be taking that stuff. She was masculine enough before to beat all of these pretty girls up without the steroids. I don't understand this at all. For now the fights should be competetitive again at the least.

Conspiracy theory: Maybe Cyborg has been juicing this whole time and the commission in league with the promoters where turning a blind eye to it. They took a shot at her being the next big thing in womens MMA. Perhaps they didnt realize how unmarketable an unattractive yet super dominant womens champ would really be. Now that they have come to grips with reality, they are trying to find ways of ridding them of Cyborg. First they were going to try and get her to drop in weight. Maybe they decided that it wasnt going to be enough and they opened the lid on her PED use in order to discredit her and make room for the more feminine and marketable fighters to win the strap.

    Just a theory mind you...

    They should let roids free!!!

Let these fighters fight like animals! We pay to watch great performances.Let them do their best.Like PRIDE days! Also let the kicks and knees to a grounded opponent. We need to know the true ultimate fighters. Then we can call them super heroes admire them and ask for their autos.

Like an actor who punishes himself by losing 30 kilos in a month just to be loyal to his croud.

Let everything free and pay them like the NBA players!

    Just do it!

Testing procedures are legit, penalties are legit... and fighters continue to use, get caught, and get penalized.

What more can organizations do? Increase suspensions to 1+ years?.. ban fighters forever? I mean at some point these fighters gotta take responsibility for their own sport... because they're disgracing it.

glade she messed up her roid cycle

its nothing uncommon, in every major US professional sport the competitors use some forms of PED's.

if anyone here grapples or has wrestled then you have likely heard the phrase "if your not cheating your not trying" while it more often refers using illegal holds etc.. at the highest level that mentality often leads many to roids.

never once tried any. in H.S. i lost at state twice to the same guy. the guy who beat me got a scholarship, while i had to join the military to help pay for my university. 1 year into my service and i found out that he lost his scholarship for testing positive.

i love seeing these cheats get busted and i like to watch them try to come back only to see that once doing roids for a extended period nonDr's orders, leaves the individual far weaker in the long run as they no longer produce the bichemicals that the roids were enhancing.

strip her of the title, hold a torney. every woman she beat was robbed of the opportunity to compete on even terms.

First, how someone weaked your comment is beyond me.

Second, I'm so sorry that happened to you. I trained with a few guys who were juicing and it was SO lame. This one guy named Ryan who went from 140, 5'9 to 190lbs, jacked up in less than 6 months. He told everyone it was from weights and protein powder but he was the most ectomorphic (naturally skinny, hard gainer) I'd met in a long while. Anyway, he told some of his friends that he was doing GH and roids and when it came out everyone laughed at him. Yeah, he definitely improved from raw strength, however, he never won a BJJ gold medal at the Panams or at Grapplers Quest.

It makes me think of what happens to the Olympians who got caught cheating a few years ago. Maybe they lost their medals, however, they still got to keep a TON of $$ from all those Wheaties box covers they were on and Nike endorsements, etc. If you get a silver medal because someone cheated you 5 years (or more) ago, you might get a belated gold medal, but you just lost a lot of cash because someone took a shortcut. You won't be on any cereal box covers with an asterisk saying " * Joe Smith was the real gold medal winner in 1988."

Did you suspect this cat was on roids when he beat you? That's the thing here, we don't know who is cheating until they get caught. And like other people are saying, to little, to late.

On top of that the percentage of people doing this sort of thing is more commonplace than fans think; which still does not make it right. Everyone seems to want any type of competetive edge they can get in MMA and any other sport out there.

Using anabolic steroids in MMA is especially ugly since it is a full contact sport and opponents will suffer the consequences.

It is unfortunate that she shall lose the belt, but she deserves to lose it. She did not need to take steroids, she would have probably won any way.

But a message needs to be sent – both to fighters and testers that control needs to be stricter, so that fights are fair.

I'm a little bit shocked that they *only* fined her $2,500. Does anyone know what her payday was for that fight? Also, since so many fighters use PED's, how is this going to play out with really important fights? For example, when Sonnen almost beat Silva, how would have the victory been effected by a positive drug test? It's easy to say "they just declare it a no contest" etc, but there are other issues- namely the safety of the fighters being mauled by competitors with super-human strength. In the legal world, we call that battery. Yes, you obviously consent to absorbing all kinds of punishment in an MMA match, however, do you consent to taking a beating from someone who is cheating? In many ways, it would be no different from accepting a fight at 205 and showing up and seeing your opponent who is really 265! Also, do fighters who cheat get most or all of their fight purse?

It's a bit comical giving these cheaters 6 month suspensions and saying "This is how they make their living, so we can't do a year or two." So, what the proponents of these lenient suspensions are saying is "if you're going to cheat, be smart and try not to get caught."

The only way to stop all this cheating is to do random drug tests that have a 72 hour window to show up for testing, with no excuses. And of course, that probably will never happen. They could at least do this for fighters in title contention, no?
