TUF 19: Edgar vs. Penn Episode 3: Dan Spohn Mixes It Up In Decision Over Todd Monoghan

The Ultimate Fighter 19: Edgar vs. Penn continued last night, with the third instalment in this season hitting our screens. LowKick.com’s good friend Daniel ‘The Dragon’ Spohn was back in action this time, squaring off against fellow light-heavyweight competitor Todd Monaghan. The episode did feature some interesting points to recap too.

MMA and Jiu-Jitsu legend Renzo Gracie visited team Edgar to begin the show, teaching some of his infamous grappling to the young fighters. Spohn said he had been working his wrestling and wanted to mix things up against ‘The Preacher’, perhaps to throw off the rest of the competition.

Monaghan discusses his Christianity with his housemates, who seem a little unconvinced and question his real reasons for taking part in TUF. On to fight time, and Monaghan vs. ‘The Dragon’ is on.

Round one started with Spohn hitting Monaghan with a nice two-punch combo, then instantly wrestling Monaghan down to the mat. ‘The Preacher’ looked out of his depth as Spohn easily passed guard and switched positions, all the time looking for the submission. ‘The Dragon’ held dominant position for a large part of the round, keeping Monaghan down and ending in the mount after looking for a choke on the ground. 10-9 Spohn

Round two commenced and it was much of the same story for Monaghan; he was unable to connect with any of his punches, and was taken down at will by Spohn. ‘The Dragon’ looked to showcase his submission prowess on the ground, but Monaghan proved tough to finish. The round ended rather similarly to the first, with Spohn in dominant position and looking for the choke from the back. 10-9 Spohn

The judges agree and Spohn advances one step closer to the finals. UFC President Dana White didn’t seem too happy with the way the fight went, but I suppose they can’t all be finishes. Spohn did well to implement a game plan, and sending a message to the rest of the competitors about his arsenal in doing so.

Spohn spoke to LowKick.com in the moments after the show aired, stating the following:

“I think the fight went really well for me. I wanted to take Todd out of his comfort zone. I think I did that very well, at the same time I put everyone on notice I’m not a one trick pony”
