John Kavanagh Discusses Conor McGregor’s Next Opponent

Conor McGregor’s Coach Questions

With Conor McGregor’s suspension for the UFC 229 brawl set to expire this spring, ‘The Notorious’ is expected to return for a big fight sometime soon. His longtime coach John Kavanagh recently discussed whom that might be against.

McGregor recently teased beginning the ‘sequel’ to his UFC debut on social media this week. He’s expected to fight Donald Cerrone in his next bout. But there are other opponents available for the MMA megastar such as Tony Ferguson, Anderson Silva, or even Jose Aldo. Indeed McGregor teased possibly fighting in Brazil after Silva’s main event at this month’s UFC 234 from Melbourne.

Kavanagh was asked about those options in an interview with MMA fréttir on YouTube. The SBG Ireland head coach said McGregor was simply looking for the highest motivating match-ups at this point:

“You know what, its the match-up that interests Conor most. He has the world at his feet, he’s not fighting for anything other reason than that it’s fun to him. Which I think is the best reason. So, it’s got to be the match-up that gets him up in the morning.”

Motivation

Many of ‘The Notorious” detractors have pointed to that mindset as the reason why McGregor is without a win since late 2016. They argue that he’s too focused on selling whiskey and causing trouble out of the cage now that he’s gotten so big.

He appears focused on returning to the UFC and winning, but as we pointed out, his next fight will be a must-win. For that reason, Kavanagh’s suggestion may prove true. There’s also been some perceived discord between McGregor and his longtime coach. Kavanagh recently stated he would have to be talked into cornering McGregor again after he was dropped by Khabib at UFC 229.

McGregor was also spotted training at a new gym recently. Perhaps there’s trouble in paradise. But both sides haven’t let on to much of that, so it will be interesting to see if Kavanagh is indeed in McGregor’s corner when he does return to the cage.
