In an almost shocking turn of events, now former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez dropped a submission loss to former interim champion and now current heavyweight boss Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum in Mexico City last night (June 13, 2015). Returning from a 20-month layoff, Velasquez and his team, American Kickboxing Academy (AKA), were highly confident, but things just didn’t go their way.

Luckily for AKA, they will have another shot to secure UFC gold very soon as top contender Luke Rockhold is next in line for a shot at middleweight champion Chris Weidman. Although a date and venue has not been set, UFC president Dana White officially broke the news a few weeks back.

Although Rockhold has expressed confidence, the champion believes he will run through everyone in the division. Speaking with MMAJunkie at UFC 188, Weidman, after making a joke about Rockhold, noted that the challenger is well-rounded, but won’t be good enough:

“He’s good looking. I’ll give him that,” Weidman said. “Other than that, he stinks at everything. No, he’s good. He’s well-rounded. It doesn’t matter. Any of these guys at my weight – I’m just running through everybody.”

Rockhold doesn’t seem to agree, as he has recently said that he’s better than Weidman in multiple areas. Continuing on, the champion reassured fans that Rockhold can’t beat him in any area of mixed martial arts (MMA):

“What’d he say?” Weidman asked. “He can beat me at everything? He can’t beat me at jiu-jitsu, he can’t beat me at stand-up, and he can’t beat me at wrestling.”

Well, this is sure shaping up to be one of the most anticipated bouts of the end of the year between two of the most well-rounded fighters on the planet. Who do you see taking this one?
