Tonight’s (November 15, 2014) UFC 180 pay-per-view (PPV) event is in the books from the Arena Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico, and with five finishes in five fights, it’s safe to say the UFC’s debut on Mexican soil was a rousing success.

In the main event, Mark Hunt and Fabricio Werdum will throw down for the interim heavyweight title. The fighters traded low kicks before Hunt dropped “Vai Cavalo” with a huge punch. Hunt shook off a takedown before Werdum  landed a spinning kick to the head. Hunt got a takedown to land in Werdum’ dangerous guard, but he somehow survived and even landed some ground and pound. “The Super Samoan” got up to land an uppercut and a left hook, but Werdum landed a big kick to close out the round.

In the second, Hunt swung wildly and just missed. He dropped Werdum with a straight right off a kick, throwing another huge shot. Werdum snapped a counter and missed a takedown attempt, but then he nailed Hunt with a massive knee to swarm with a barrage of shots to become the interim heavyweight champion.

Welterweights Jake Ellenberger and Kelvin Gastelum faced off in a pivotal welterweight affair in the evening’s co-main event. The fighters traded effective shots early on, with Ellenberger landing both a left and right and Gastelum, a leg kick and a right. Ellenberger pushed forward with his punches but was taken down. Ellenberger got back up to suplex Gastelum, but the TUF winner persevered to lock on a super-tight rear naked choke to earn by far his biggest win.

Top-ranked featherweights Dennis Bermudez and Ricardo Lamas will also go to war on the main card, and one that has huge title implications for both “The Bully” and “The Menace”. Bermudez landed a stiff right hand and clinched to open the bout, maintaing Octagon control until Lamas dropped him with a front kick to lock on a front headlock. Lamas dropped Bermudez with a jab, jumping on a super-tight guillotine choke to end “The Menace’s” seven-fight win streak in the first round.

Augusto Montano met Chris Heatherly at welterweight. Heatherly got an early takedown but Montano was scrambling for submissions. Montano unleashed a torrent of knees, but Heatherly persevered to land a big uppercut. Mexico City native Montano went back to his dangerous Muay Thai, landing an endless string of huge knees to earn the stoppage with only 10 seconds left in the first round. A huge UFC debut for the promising welterweight.

Hector “El Toro” Urbina made his Octagon debut against Edgar Garcia at welterweight. Urbina came out throwing some kicks, but was taken down by Garcia, who locked in some hooks to land some good ground shots. He went for a choke but was reversed by Urbina, who locked up a viciously tight guillotine choke to earn the first round tapout.
