UFC on FX 4 Results Recap: Gray Maynard defeats Clay Guida via Split Decision
Posted on June 22, 2012, 10:40 PM by Mike DrahotaUFC on FX is over from Atlantic City, New Jersey and the main event found Gray Maynard delivering an important win at Lightweight. After losing to Frankie Edgar last fall, Maynard needed a victory to stay relevant at 155 lbs. At least for the moment, he held off the many fighters breathing down his neck. The fights featured a lot of technical fighting, with decisions comprising 3 out of 4 main card bouts.
Lightweight contenders Clay Guida and Gray Maynard stayed on the feet for the first round, with Guida using his trademark movement to bloody Maynard's nose. The Carpenter appeared to be just out of range of all Maynard's strikes in the opening stanza. The second round started with an inadvertent eye poke from Guida. Guida did land a few solid combinations, but we saw more of the same from both in a rather uneventful round. The third saw Gray Maynard land some good punches, only to have Guida back away again. Maynard ended the round with some trash talk. The fourth round saw Gray Maynard land several knees from the clinch and taunt Guida. Maynard stopped a takedown and tried to lock on the Guillotine, but Guida bounced out to cheers from the crowd. Guida scored a nice headkick followed with punches early in the fifth, The Bully continued to stalk his opponent, but Guida's evasiveness earned him a warning. Maynard put the fight up against the fence then landed some more knees as the crowd booed. Gray Maynard wins the five-round affair with a close Split Decision.
Sam Stout and Spencer Fisher fought at UFC 58 and at UFC Fight Night: Stout vs. Fisher, splitting the bouts in a pair of decisions. In the trilogy match, they began slowly with Fisher landing a good hook . Stout eventually got the takedown and landed some short elbows. Fisher got up but Stout used the double leg. Again, Fisher could not be kept down. The second round saw some striking exchanges, with Stout again scoring a takedown and keeping in control from the top position. Stout appeared to have won the round. The final round saw some good striking from both until Stout took it to the ground. Stout utilized some great combinations to close the third round, bloodying Fisher. Sam Stout wins the rubber match with a Unanimous Decision.
T.J. Waldburger landed a great straight in the first round, rocking Brian Ebersole. Waldburger eventually gained an advantageous position and locked in a tight D'Arce choke. Amazingly, Brian Ebersole did not submit. Round 2 saw the two fighters going to the ground early, with an Omaplata attempt from Waldburger. Ebersole again showed great submission defense, stopping both armbar and triangle attempts. Ebersole looked fresher at the start of the third, trying a cartwheel kick and scoring a takedown. He finished the round out with some strikes from top position. Ebersole wins the round and the fight with a Unanimous Decision.
Lightweights Cub Swanson and Ross Pearson came out swinging in the opening Main Card bout. Pearson was rocked early by a big punch, but recovered well. Swanson scored a Capoeira-style kick and some subsequent upkicks, with a few hard punches from Pearson on the ground. In the second, Cub Swanson landed a front kick and some good shots that floored Pearson, earning the TKO stoppage.

Wow, I'm gonna have to wait and see the FightMetric numbers on this fight. I thought Guida was outworking and outlanding Maynard everywhere but the brief moments in the clinch. I find it hard to believe that Maynard won on just octagon control.
I thought the judges did a great job. I thought Guida was going to Condit the hell out of Maynard.
I'm right there with you. Most of what Guida was doing was jumping around outside of Maynard's range and frustrating him. I thought Clay had a good game plan that worked on my score card but it seems a lot of people on this site disagree. I can see why I guess and if this was Pride Clay would have received a yellow card but I thought he won the fight.
Maybe next time they can draw a line in the center of the ring and not move from it, taking turns hitting each other to the delight of the drunken, out for blood fans.
I agree with you Switters. In my opinion you can evade as much as you want, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT FRUSTRATES YOUR OPPONENT AND MAKES HIM START DOING STUPID THINGS like standing motionless waiting for the other to come at him.
I mean these guys are profesionnal. Their job is not to please the fans it's to win the fight. They do what they need to do in order to win the fight.
This was way worse than Condit. At least Condit landed a few good strikes in his fight with Nick, Guida's performance was more along the lines of Kalib Starnes. I'm glad the judges gave Maynard the win, hopefully Guida will get back to actually fighting and not running like a pvssy.
Wow, Kalib Starnes. Thats low man. Real low....
That was a truly awful performance from Guida. I am amazed that so many fans are saying Guida won; running around with your tail between your legs while throwing the occasional ineffectual jab should not win you anything. Fvck that and fvck Greg Jackson's 'gameplans'.
They need fans like you in WWE. Seriously, please do everybody on this website a favor and go educate yourself about martial arts.
I'm not saying Guida win the fight, I'm only saying that he adopted the best style to win the fight. If he played Maynard's game he would have get beaten up badly but his style frustrated maynard and allowed guida to land a little more.
Yes, of course I am but an uneducated heathen here to watch blood spatter and am better suited for the WWE, while you sir are a fine connoisseur of the sport, drinking in every second of the enthralling action with wine glass in hand, cigar elegantly perched between your lips and head firmly planted up your own anus.
At least I know the difference between technique and running.
@jdnextchamp: Indeed. Maybe you should teach that difference to the referee in that fight who cautioned Guida. Other 'WWE fans' to whom you should probably provide wisdom and guidance about technique would include Dana White, Joe Rogan, Daniel Cormier, Melvin Guillard etc (it's a long list) and all the other people who were majorly critical of Guida's performance. Of course, you know better than all of them.
had it 48-47 clay, but its fair to say im not a big maynard fan so i'm willing to accept i may have let myself be swayed, waiting for stats.
One guy came to fight and that was Maynard. Fvck the stats, a dozen lazy jabs with no power behind them are worth less than a single good, hard knee to the face. Judging criteria are based on 'effective' striking, grappling etc as well as octagon control. There's no way you can call any of Guida's strikes effective and he certainly didn't have octagon control.
He had Gray on wibble wobby legs with that leg kick to the face in the 5th and Maynard's face was busted up pretty good. Clay at times did run, which wasn't pretty to watch but most of the time was jumping in and out and staying out of Grays reach. I thought Clay won but the judges, like you, must have thought that Clay back away to often because the stats will show that Clay had the upper hand at least 4 of the 5 rounds.
@Switters: Actuallly, Fightmetric had it 48-47 to Maynard, so no, not even the stats would suggest that Clay had the 'upper hand' in 4 of the 5 rounds as you suggest. Guida threw a lot more punches than Maynard, it's just that the overwhelming majority of those punches missed. What the stats don't tell you however is how damaging the strikes that were landed really were; taking that into account rather than just raw numbers, I had Maynard winning rounds 3 to 5, with round 1 to Guida and the 2nd 10-10.
Wow, that surprises me about the Fightmetric stats. I guess I was wrong on this one. I really dislike Maynard so i'm guessing that had a lot to do with my opinion.
godswararise you forgot that Guida landed a kick that made truly affected Maynard late in the fight. Guida's strike kept Maynard to a great distance so yes, it is effective striking.
And also octagon control is a ground game criteria. In a ring you can have a ring control but in the octagon there's no such things. Maynard certainly chased Guida but was never able to get to a great distance and to keep Guida in place, it that what you call control? No, Thanks!
Now you know why Dana suffers from vertigo...watching guida moon walk around the ring.
Greg Jackson almost pulls off another game plan.
Greg Jackson is an MMA genius. He made a gameplan that got Maynard frustrated and you have to respect that. Stylistically this was the best way for Guida to win this fight.
I agree
If guida fights like in round one, it's a good game plan, round 3 to 5 is just ....... f.....g boring !
I turned of my p.c after the fight, before the result, thinking, guida would get it, much to my frustration. (that's not fighting/ mma)
Glad the judges didn't like it also !!
Being illusive is fine, not making contact is, well, not mma !
Literally one of the worst performances I have ever seen in the UFC. Ugly, boring, uneventful, no attempt at a stoppage. Just an egregious performance by Clay. I understand game-planning and all but **** me. Just terrible.
Clay I love you, but please never do that again.
Maynard seemed like a huge D-Bag tonight. Maybe it's because I like Clay, but I thought Maynard acted like a whiny little B#@CH tonight. Close fight I guess but I had Clay winning 3 of the 4. To much running i'll grant you but I thought it worked.
I HAVE A QUESTION GUYS::
What's wrong with running, if it is efficient?
I know it's not the best thing to watch but you have to understand that this is a sport. It's not a show. It's not fake. When these guys get in that cage their #1 goal is to win not to please the fans. If you don't agree with that you simply like drunken fights more than technical battles.
"If you don't agree with that you simply like drunken fights more than technical battles".
You are either with us or with the terrorizors.
Guida Kalib Starnes'd the hell outta Maynard. Deplorable, but the decision was the correct one.
okay i am gonna point out the only reason maynard got those "hard shots" in were because he was pulling clay's hair.....honestly you guys are crazy i mean all everyone wants anymore is blood well i gotta say now sorry to ruin your plans but with the new guys coming up more and more everyday like clay condit GSP and dominick there will be more "running" even tho it's called dodging...don't believe me? watch a boxing match and tell me you don't see much of the same.....these guys are MMA fighters not bloody beast bless god
what most people seem to call running is what i call disengaging, and if you are being pressured backwards and are about to hit fencing with your heels, moving away from such an obstacle is not only common sense, but shows that your opponent is doing a poor job of controlling you, and ofcourse when you get wobbled you want to disengage or swing furiously which is what suprised me about guidas warning.. no one gave edgar a warning for running away when he was doing backflips across the octagon trying to avoid being knocked out..
Did anyone else see them kiss at the beginning of the fight? They got called to the center of the cage, they were a little too eager to get to the stare down, walked up to each other a little too fast, their faces got a little too close, AND WAM! LIPS TOUCHED! I SAW IT MAN! I will never forget it. I'm gonna write it in my diary and draw cute pictures of them holding hands and kissing.
Dana White's opinion below
"The fight sucked. I don't know how to expand on it anymore," White told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) at the post-fight news conference. "… I don't think that was a split decision at all. I think Gray Maynard won that fight easily. Nobody can win or lose a fight when the guy is running around in circles. He was literally running. I had some guys who are fans on Twitter saying, 'Great footwork.' This isn't (expletive) 'Dancing With the Stars.' You can't win a fight by running around in circles – that's not how fights are won."
According to Dana White, Kalib Starnes has now been dethroned, his successor is Clay Guida.
Harsh !
It's funny how Gray said-I want that belt back, excuse you hillbilly you never had the belt!
