Cub Swanson Will Undergo Elbow Surgery, Faces 4 Weeks Out

UFC Featherweight Cub Swanson has been on a tear in the 145lb. division, scoring five impressive victories since January of 2012. After an unsuccessful UFC debut against Ricardo Lamas in 2011, it looked like it may have been a rough ride for the WEC veteran, but a brutal TKO win over George Roop in January 2012 dispelled any doubts.

Swanson went on to knock out Ross Pearson and Charles Oliveira in quick succession and a decision win over Dustin Poirer in February this year had Swanson being talked about for a title shot. Swanson was the booked to face Kickboxing ace Dennis Siver at UFC 162, and it was a barn burner.

The two put on a fight of the night earning performance, culminating in a brutal third round TKO win for Swanson and now the So-Cal slugger fins himself in a very promising position. Which is why the news of Swanson having to undergo elbow surgery will be that much more disappointing for the Greg Jackson product’s fans.

The news emerged on last night’s edition of UFC Tonight and may even have come at the best time possible for Swanson. If the elbow injury is a pre-existing condition, it may be a prudent move to have it fixed rather than take a bad knock in a title fight with Jose Aldo.

‘The Korean Zombie’ showed that turning up to fight Aldo in top condition can be very dangerous, let alone carrying a nasty injury. Swanson had previously hinted towards an eliminator bout with Ricardo Lamas, who now looks to be next in line for the title shot.

Perhaps a return in 2014 would prove to be a very wise decision for Swanson, although who knows how the ever deep 145lb. class will look by that time. It is always hard to find the right time to fix an injury, lets hope that Swanson can make a speedy recovery and maintain his place in the top end at FW.
