Brazilian MMA prospect and UFC Welterweight Erick Silva is coming off an impressive first round submission against Jason High. The two met at UFC on Fuel in June, with Silva earning the win with an impressive inverted triangle armbar.
Silva’s coach, Josuel Distak was on hand to talk to MMAFighting.com about his future at 170:
“Erick Silva will fight again in October, against that guy that defeated Paulo Thiago. It’s a tough fight, (Kim) will try to do what (Jon) Fitch did to Erick, but Erick is way better now. He had weight issues before that fight, but he no longer has that problem.”
So it seems that Dong Hyun Kim is next for the 29 year old from Vila Velha. Kim is on a two fight win streak, including the win over Thiago and a decision win over Sayir Bahadurzada.
“We are going for the knockout,” Josuel added. “Erick needs to avoid the takedowns and keep the fight standing. If he goes to the ground, we are trained too.”
Both Kim and Silva have a ton of potential, yet to be realized given their unfortunate recent losses. Jon Fitch dominated Silva in their fight, and Silva was pretty unlucky to get DQ’d against Carlo Prater. Kim suffered an injury in his fight against Maia, and the was nothing he could do to stop Carlos Condit’s flying knee…except maybe move out of the way.
This fight will be pivotal for the future of these two guys, a win for Kim might put him on the fringe of the title picture, and Silva will certainly be building a good claim. With such a stacked division, it is no longer good enough to simply win.
Finishing or FOTN performances are the name of the game, get yourself known as a crowd pleaser or a knockout artist and things tend to go your way a bit more.
Look for an early finish in this one.
