Frank Mir says loss to JDS doesn't take much away from Cain Velasquez

Former Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir, who will face fellow former title holder Cain Velasquez at UFC 146, discusses his opponent, and looks back on his first-round submission victory over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Mir explains that though Velasquez was "caught" by Junior dos Santos, he still considers the AKA fighter to be among the top ranked Heavyweights in the world.

Frank Mir

"I think that Cain is still ranked up higher. I think that being undefeated and being the champ, and then, you know, he lost to Junior dos Santos, but he got caught with a shot. It wasn't like it was a devastating, three or four rounds, where dos Santos completely just dismantled him round after round after minute - he got caught with a shot and finished off, and that's the nature of the Heavyweight fights. So, I think it still leaves a lot of questions marks around Cain. I don't really think it takes too much away from him. I think that just says, 'Hey, when guys are this big, and a guy gets caught, stuff happens.' So, I think that Cain's still ranked up to where he is - it still kind of gives him that credit to where he can bounce right back into title contention."

True say by Frank Mir, We haven't seen Cain suck, we've seen him get clocked hard by a KO master. Anybody would fall, its how he comes back that will determine things, sorta like it should be in life, see how they bounce back. That's how you determine.....

Like Frank or hate him he always says what he feels. Often hes right in his view point. arrogant always but we've gotten used to Frank, thats just the way he is. What kind of image would you try to project to others in his position?

Cain got caught early is all. I still think in a rematch JDS will beat him, but it wont be so fast for sure.

I'd believe that Mir might have more power than JDS in a punch just from body structure, in the same way that Brock Lesnar probably does. JDS is a wonderful hybrid of power and technique, however. When Mir says "if I connect" comparing his standup to JDS' boxing, that's a fairly big "if".

@Lights_out11: In my opinion, that has more to do with Nog than Mir. He had three surgeries, including a double hip replacement, and was finally back in top form. He WTFwrecked Brendan Schaub with his standup too, and you could see in Schaub's face that he was utterly shocked at how hard Minotauro hits now. So was Mir. I don't think anyone else will be in the future.

This is what Frank's been waiting for. He's worked his wrestling for years now to compete with the strong grapplers at Heavyweight. He was hoping for the rematch with Brock, but he always knew Cain was a serious threat as well. It's good to see that he doesn't think Cain was overhyped after the TKO from JDS. I'd hate for him to come underprepared and get wrecked because of it. How he matches up against Cain will give everyone a good look into his progress.

GoldenBibi, you're drunk. Even if Cain gets past Mir, there's no way he's beating JDS.

I tend to agree with Mir on this. Cain was on fire up until he met JDS in the cage.

1st off those odds may be a bit off, cause if so. I'd put my money on Mir for the up-set!!

    otherwise, Cain via rape!lmao

I know SportScience measures things like punching power. Have Mir or JDS ever actually been measured for that?
