Thiago Silva’s Lawyer Claims ‘Trigger Happy’ Cops Treated His Client ‘Like A Terrorist’
Thiago Silva recently took himself to the cleaners, as far as his UFC job is concerned, by getting himself arrested for an alleged assault with a deadly weapon and felony attempted murder. The charges were eventually lessened but the Brazilian knockout artist had already dropped the ball and was sacked by the UFC.
Silva’s lawyer was able to get the charge downgraded to aggravated assault with a firearm and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, so his client is still in fairly hot water. With potential jail time looming, Silva’s attorney Scott Saul has spoken out in defense of his troubled client. Check out what he said via bleacherreport.com:
“There was NO REASON for cops to call in the SWAT team to apprehend Thiago Silva … the “trigger-happy” police simply overreacted … so says the UFC fighter’s lawyer … Saul says … cops went “overboard” because he’s a UFC fighter. … “There was no allegation of harm against anyone,” Saul says … ‘But they treated it like a terrorist threat.””
Silva was just on the edge of earning his legitimacy in the UFC, and a third straight win against his scheduled opponent Ovince St-Preux at UFC 171 could have put him on course for title glory. As it stands, it is highly unlikely that he will ever fight as a pro again.
The alleged story of the night in question is that Silva put a gun in his wife’s mouth, threatened to kill her and her son, and then went on a tear up at a local MMA gym before barricading himself in his apartment in a stand off with local authorities. Quite clearly troubled, it sounds like Silva himself was lucky to not catch a bullet.
“She advised that the defendant and she were arguing over accusations of an extramarital affair. During the argument, the defendant picked up a silver colored revolver, pushed her to the sofa, pointed the firearm at her and told her he was going to kill her. When she began to scream, he covered her mouth with his free hand. He then placed the firearm in her mouth”
A snippet of the original police report, as obtained by MMAJunkie after the fact, detailing what sounds like a gruesome assault. That was only the tip of the iceberg, as we later learned when the whole sordid affair became a public spectacle after days of media attention. Someone is telling lies here; either Silva’s lawyer or his wife.
