Dustin Poirier has not been promised he will challenge for the UFC lightweight title if he gets his hand raised against Max Holloway.

This comes after the promotion announced that he will fight featherweight champion Holloway for the interim UFC lightweight title. This fight will serve as the headliner of April’s UFC 236 pay-per-view event.

Thus, it appears that Holloway is the only one who is fighting to challenge Khabib Nurmagomedov for the strap. The title contender therefore made the news known in a recent interview.

“No I have not been promised that. But I assume when I get the belt around my waist that’s what it means. That’s what the interim title means, it means you’re next,” he said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show (H/T to MMAMania).

“We will cross that bridge when we get to it. I got my hands full, I got another six weeks of grind, I don’t want to create problems that aren’t there yet. I got a lot to do before that. It’s a little weird for him to jump up and get a crack at the interim belt, but at the same time, If I’m the next guy, the fight makes sense with the story line that I beat him seven years ago.”

The UFC 236 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET and the the UFC’s streaming service, Fight Pass.
