Dustin Poirier reveals he’d come out of retirement for possible Justin Gaethje trilogy
UFC legend Dustin Poirier has teased the idea of coming out of retirement for a third fight against Justin Gaethje.
As we know, Dustin Poirier is one of the most beloved fighters in the history of mixed martial arts. Last summer, he left the sport once and for all in the wake of an epic trilogy fight against Max Holloway. While a lot of people would love to see him return, he got a pretty special send-off down in New Orleans, and it did feel like a lovely way to close the chapter on his epic career.
Justin Gaethje, meanwhile, is the new UFC interim lightweight champion after defeating Paddy Pimblett in the main event of UFC 324. Dustin Poirier has faced him twice inside the cage, beating him in their first meeting before suffering a head kick knockout in the rematch.
In a recent exchange on social media, Dustin Poirier revealed that he wouldn’t be against fighting Gaethje for a third time.
Dustin Poirier teases Justin Gaethje trilogy
Thomson: “I wanna see @dustinpoirier come back for this fight to finish it up.”
Poirier: “@therealpunk I’ll come back for that one.”
Poirier himself has admitted that there are parts of retirement he’s been struggling with, which isn’t exactly surprising given that the same has been true for plenty of fighters over the years. Still, he’s keeping himself busy, and it doesn’t feel like there’s any real substance behind this claim, especially now that Gaethje holds the UFC interim lightweight championship.
‘The Highlight’ looks set for either an undisputed title fight against Ilia Topuria, an interim title clash with Arman Tsarukyan, or perhaps even a bizarre superfight against Conor McGregor. Whatever the case may be, there’s a great deal of excitement in the air for what the future holds at 155 pounds.
