Another day, another interim title from the UFC. This time it’s an interim middleweight title fight for an upcoming pay-per-view event.

According to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, the UFC has decided to schedule an interim 185-pound title bout between Kelvin Gastelum and Israel Adesanya for April’s UFC 236:

Gastelum was set to fight champion Robert Whittaker at February 9’s UFC 234 from Melbourne, Australia. The fight was called off at the last minute when Whittaker was forced into emergency surgery for a hernia and collapsed bowel.

Adesanya fought former champion Anderson Silva in the new UFC 234 main and emerged victorious in a solid bout. After his greatest win, he proclaimed he should be the next title contender.

He’ll get his wish, albeit in a roundabout way.

Okamoto confirmed that it was unknown whether the bout would be the main event of UFC 236. The pay-per-view is also without a location as of this writing, but both sides have agreed to the fight.
