UFC Fight Night 50 Main Card Recap: “Jacare” Gets Revenge On Mousasi

UFC Fight Night 50 is done-and-dusted from the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut and fans were treated to a spectacular main card.

Headlining the card was a pivotal middleweight rematch between former Strikeforce champions Gegard Mousasi and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza which turned out to be a completely one-sided affair.

“Jacare” dominated the first two rounds, taking Mousasi down to the mat and completely controlling him on the ground. “The Dreamcatcher” managed to defend an early takedown in the third to offload some offence off his own but that didn’t matter as he was rocked by a big flurry from the Brazilian who then again planted him on his back.

Mousasi was already showing some visible damage and Souza continued his onslaught, planting the Iranian on the canvas. However, this time “Jacare” had more success with his ji-jitsu and sunk in a guillotine, forcing the tap with just over thirty seconds to go.

In the co-main event, former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem suffered his third knockout loss in the UFC after he was flattened by “Big” Ben Rothwell. Rothwell was a huge underdog coming into the contest at nearly 5-1 but that didn’t stop him putting “The Reem’s” lights out to put him to 2-3 in his UFC career. Overeem was in control of the bout early on and looked sharp but a right hand buckled him before a straight behind the eye put him to the mat.

Matt Mitrione added another victim to his highlight reel of knockouts in Derrick Lewis after smashing the “Black Beast” in their bout. “Meatball” never gave his opponent any opportunity to amount any offence by coming at him right from the bell. A short right hand as Lewis was coming in sent him crashing to the canvas and a few more follow up shots finished the job.

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 competitor now has back-to-back wins in the UFC following his win over Shawn Jordan in March at the TUF: China Finale.

To get the main card going, UFC veteran Joe Lauzon and TUF season 15 winner Michael Chiesa went to war in a highly entertaining contest. The fight was fairly close after the first round but “J-Lau” pushed it up a gear in the second and caused a huge cut over the right eye of Chiesa which the cage-side doctor deemed to bad for him to continue.
