Fabricio Werdum Asks To Fight Daniel Cormier; DC Awaits The Date

UFC heavyweight contender Fabricio Werdum returned to the octagon with a bang at last month’s UFC on Fuel TV 10, submitting legendary champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira with a second round armbar. And since he spent most of the prior year coaching on the second season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil, he’s anxious to keep the momentum by returning to the cage against the world’s best.

Apparently he already has someone in mind, and that man is Strikeforce World Heavyweight Grand Prix Winner Daniel Cormier. Cormier made his rather unimpressive UFC debut at UFC on Fox 7 against Frank Mir. While he won a slow unanimous decision, many thought it was the octagon jitters taking effect. Dana White spoke up during his UFC 162 media scrum to explain Werdum’s request:

“Werdum was in my office two days ago. That’s who he wants to fight…so we’ll see what happens.”

That could definitely be quite the enticing bout, potentially setting up a future title bout against the winner of October’s Cain Velasquez /JDS III fight at UFC 166. If there were any knock on the overall skill set of Daniel Cormier, it would be that he is inexperienced in the submission arena. Werdum is of course a world-class BJJ practitioner. Still, Cormier told MMA Junkie Radio that he is ready to take the fight:

“Why not? Well, he asked to fight me. Someone said Dana discussed it in his scrum this week. I just need a date and know when I’m fighting.”

However, Cormier has been linked to a possible move to light heavyweight for a date with champion Jon Jones. He noted that he has dropped down to around 220 lbs., and a move to 205 may be the only way for DC to become champion without having to fight his good friend and training partner Cain Velasquez. On the Jones fight, DC said:

“It’s not about him (Jones); it’s about me trying to be the champion and without fighting Cain Velasquez. But if the champion is still Jon – and I don’t see anyone actually beating him – then why not test yourself against the best in the world?”

Quite the confidence from the surging Cormier. I think a bout featuring he and Werdum would be a great co-main event for an upcoming cards, perhaps even UFC 166 to set up the next blockbuster heavyweight championship bout. Who is your early pick?

  • Could you imagine a wrestling show down between cormier and bones?

At the moment it seems like gsp is spooked out by Anderson, anderson is spooked out by jones preferring gsp fight and cormier is spooked out by fighting teammate Cain…everyone is spooked out right now. I think cormier should just drop to 205 and go and get a title shot with bones considering melendez got his. He could be waiting forever at 265 if cain continues.

  • D

Well Werdum has lost his mind. He won't outstrike this guy, and he has no other option.

I expect another 15 minutes of Werdum flopping, lying on his back with his legs open, smiling and beckoning. Cormier is too smart to play that game.

  • dc gonna destroy him

    • What happens when Daniel takes him down though? Get subbed? guess we'll see.
Cormier has never faced a BJJ guy like Werdum before. Barnett insnt even in the same league and Werdum is a pretty good striker….ask Big Country and Alisterd Overroid.

  • That's pretty brave from Werdum.. Lol. If anything, he should be happy DC is dropping down to LHW so he wouldn't have to face him but i guess he's really feeling himself and confident enough to put his nuts on the chopping block! Good for him…!! Won't end well though….
