We all know it’s a dangerous sport, that’s a big part of why we all tune in to watch mixed martial arts, but on the odd occasions disaster can strike. For Steve Watts, an amateur MMA fighter aged 40, was paralyzed from the neck down during an unregulated show in California.
After attempting a takedown and landing half in a guillotine choke, Watts, also a guitar player, landed awkwardly on the ring canvas. He shattered his V-4 vertebrae, leaving him without feeling or faculty from the shoulders down.
UFC bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey had a special message for Watts, and his reply can also be seen in the video by MMA Digest. It’s a tragic tale, but the will of a human is something that’s often very underestimated.
‘Rowdy’ is proving to be an inspiration for millions, and is making a habit of trying to help ill people in recent times. It just goes to show there’s more to her than the feisty and dominant fighter we see in the octagon.
It’s great to see in the video that the physio team around the stricken amateur fighter has managed to regain some of his mobility. We’ll remain hopeful that Watts can get back to full health in the future.
