Scott Coker: Melendez vs. Aoki 2 in works for New Years Eve in Japan
Posted on November 1, 2010, 10:37 AM by Anton Gurevich• Coker suggested Robbie Lawler could get a title shot against middleweight champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza if Lawler defeats Matt Lindland on Dec. 4. However, if Lindland wins, a rematch against Souza doesn’t sound likely: "I think if Robbie wins, I think that would be a great fight. Let’s just see what happens on December 4. Jacare, I know he wants to fight, get back in the cage. We’ll have him probably in the first quarter of [2011]. He definitely will be fighting."
• Coker would like to promote Josh Thomson against Tatsuya Kawajiri in the U.S.
• Coker was impressed with Shinya Aoki’s win over Kawajiri. He said Aoki looked much more comfortable in a ring than he did in the cage against Gilbert Melendez. He’s working on a rematch between Melendez and Aoki that would take place in a ring on New Year’s Eve in Japan.
• Coker would like to match Brett Rogers against Lavar Johnson

Well, it looks like Melendez vs Alvarez will not happen anytime soon. This way or another, there's still a good case for promoting Aoki vs Mlendez 2, especially on the home turf of "Tobikan Judan". Shinya Aoki went 3-0 after losing to Melendez at Strikeforce: Nashville, defeating Tatsuya Kawajiri, Marcus Aurelio and Yokthai Sithoar. As for Melendez, "El Nino" is inactive since victory over Shinya Aoki, and will definitely need another bout this year to stay in good shape for 2011.

I wonder if the ring will make a difference. sure hope so...
I really do want to see Gil and Aoki again. Gil did win decisively but I think Shinya can do better the 2nd time around.
Thats wat I was going to say, Melendez will win via decision most likely, rather see Melendez vs Alvarez
I think Gil would get smashed but who knows til we see it.
i guess Melendez isn't gonna get what he wants for x-mas, neither is Alverez
It's funny b/c Melendez said he wouldn't gain anything from going against Aoki again and yet they're making him do it anyway.
Thats pretty lame for New Years, and who wants to see that crap again?
Aoki needs to stick to grappling tournaments.
Ya I dont want to watch this fight again especially seeing Melendez hasn't even fought anyone else since Aoki so he will be fighting Aoki back to back which is stupid, rather see him fight Thomson for the trilogy or Alvarez
as for Alvarez vs Melendez i don't see it happening anytime soon with all this i text u crap between Rebney and Coker.
Plus Gil hinted that he'd be leaving SF if the didnt get him a fight soon
So I think Aoki vs Gil in Japan is the wisest choice... for now!
I have a question? Would it be wise for DW 2 do another Penn vs Edgar 3? That would be pretty much the same thing as this crap again.
@YouKnow.....Nothing
the main reason Dana done the rematch in the first place is because Penn fans thought it was a controversial decision, which it wasn't IMO, whereas Gil did dominate Aoki, and there wasnt much controversy surrounding the bout! all I was tryin to say was, Aoki came to the US to fight Gil in his backyard, now Gil should go to Japan (Aoki's Back yard) and we'll see what he can do in Japan and see if the ring vs cage plays out any differently, also with all this text crap between Coker and Rebney I don't see Eddie vs Gil happening anytime soon, so for now Aoki vs Gil in Japan is the wisest choice, its either that or the 3rd installment of Thompson vs Melendez, as SF are struggling to find Gil a legit opponent, plus Aoki has won 3 fights since his loss to Gil, and Melendez hasnt had any more fights, so if Gil can go to Japan and beat Aoki again I think that will solidify his place among the top LW's
I'm always excited about MMA fights but I soo wanna see Eddie vs Gilbert over Gilbert vs Shinya (simply because we've seen it all ready). and even though I think Shinya will do MUCH better in the 2nd fight, ESPECIALLY in Japan there's something uber exciting and enticing about Eddie vs Gil!!!
way too soon for the rematch, plus the first one sucked balls...actually that whole card was terrible
They all went to decision. All pretty boring decisions.
Strikeforce is just trying to beat UFC 125 on New Years
i dont understand this match up. cage or not milendez dominated aoki and this is a terrible and unfair match up for melendez, he already won i dont see what he has to gain from this
To me its like BJ and Frankie. Aoki is still regarded as one of the best and Gil isn't. Some people want to see if he can do it again. I'm slowly coming around to Melendez but for some reason, I'm not a big believer in him yet.
Get Fedor a fight in Japan on NYE.
I'd like to see that fight.
i want to see a rematch of this fight. but i would much rather watch melendez vs alvarez. in this rematch i hope aoki submits melendez
