Islam Makhachev Calls Out Kamaru Usman as his Dream Opponent To Break UFC Record

Islam Makhachev

If Islam Makhachev beats Jack Della Maddalena, he will tie Anderson Silva’s record of 16 straight victories in the UFC. If he does this, Islam wants to battle Kamaru Usman – who managed to reach 15 – in an attempt to break the record set by ‘The Spider.

Over the course of the next couple of days, Islam Makhachev will be putting the final pieces of his preparation together as he gears up for a blockbuster main event on Saturday night. He will challenge Jack Della Maddalena for the UFC welterweight championship at UFC 322, and if he wins, he will join an exclusive club of fighters who have been able to become two-weight world champions in the UFC.

Alas, in the sport of mixed martial arts, it’s pretty common for fighters to look to the future. Islam Makhachev is currently on a 15-fight win streak, as was the case for Kamaru Usman prior to him getting knocked out by Leon Edwards. Islam, similarly to Usman, is the favorite heading into the JDM fight, and he expects to walk out of New York City with gold wrapped around his waist.

This, as we know, is going to be easier said than done. While Islam Makhachev would obviously like to break the record we’ve been discussing, the only thing on his mind right now should be Jack Della Maddalena. Still, in a recent interview, Makhachev did have an answer when asked who he would like to face in his next bout if he does manage to get past the Australian sensation.

Islam Makhachev calls for Kamaru Usman showdown

“One of the best fighters of all time in welterweight, Kamaru Usman. I will choose him.”

Makhachev vs Usman is a fight that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago, but it does feel like something that would be plausible if Islam picks up the win at the weekend. Usman has made it clear that he wants to go after the welterweight strap again before he retires, and although this would be one of the toughest tests of his career, he certainly won’t shy away from it.
