‘DC’ Names UFC’s Best Current-Lightweight, Explains Why Arman Tsarukyan vs Ilia Topuria Must Happen
Former UFC double champion Daniel Cormier recently gave his two cents on why he thinks a fight between Arman Tsarukyan and Ilia Topuria must happen sooner or later.
Ahalkalakets’ had called out Topuria earlier this year, after his round two submission win over Dan Hooker at UFC Qatar. However, the Georgian-Spaniard went on hiatus for personal reasons and has ZERO interest in the fight.
The constant back-and-forth between Tsarukyan and Topuria on the internet has demonstrated the bad blood between the two. The Armenian thinks ‘El Matador’ is ducking him, and Topuria thinks ‘Ahalkalakets’ does not deserve a second title shot after pulling out of UFC 311 title fight vs. Islam Makhachev.
For Tsarukyan, fighting for the undisputed belt anytime soon seems impossible, as the promotion has announced an interim title fight between Paddy Pimblett and Justin Gaethje to headline UFC 324. The winner of this bout will fight Topuria later this year to unify the titles.
Daniel Cormier picks Arman Tsarukyan as the current best UFC lightweight, says Topuria vs Tsarukyan must happen
‘DC’ recently shared his thoughts on who he thinks is the best lightweight in the UFC at the moment. Cormier chose Arman Tsarukyan as the current best 155-pounder. The 46-year-old also added why he thinks Ilia Topuria vs. Tsarukyan must happen. He told Red Corner MMA:
“I think that Arman Tsarukyan is doing everything to stay active. Listen, man, this guy might just be the best lightweight in the world since Islam’s gone. He is really good. He is big, he is strong, and he’s physical. The champion, Ilia Topuria, is tremendous. I think Ilia and Arman are the two best guys in the world. I think they need to fight at some point because I think Paddy Pimblett is awesome, Justin Gaethje is awesome. Arman and Ilia seem to have something. And not only something in terms of skill, but between the two, that we can build a great fight around…They need to fight at some point.”

On the other hand, after being denied a second title shot, Tsarukyan has already declared himself as a champion without a belt. He posted on Threads:
“Number 1 next to my name for a reason. The belt is just a formality at this point.”
