Dana White Offers Ominous Update On Conor McGregor vs. Donald Cerrone Bout
With Conor McGregor’s trouble with the NSAC now in the rearview, MMA’s megastar can return his focus to whom his UFC return will be against. He’s been linked to a fan-favorite bout with the one they call ‘Cowboy.’ But Dana White isn’t so quick to guarantee McGregor vs. Donald Cerrone just yet.
The fight seemed to be an eventuality when White said he would make the bout if both wanted it. McGregor seemed to agree after the war-tested vet knocked out a young, rising competitor in Alexander Hernandez at UFC on ESPN+ 1. Reports speculated it would take place at July 6’s UFC 239. White began to change his tune soon thereafter, however, noting that it wasn’t even close to done.
Negotiations have apparently cooled so much that the fight may not happen whatsoever. White revealed at today’s UFC 236 press conference that it was so far away from reality, they’ve started looking at new bouts for Cerrone:
“Yeah, listen, these two have been talking about this. I said if those they wanna fight I would do it, but we’re nowhere near close to a fight. We’re actually looking at other opponents right now for ‘Cowboy.’”
Not exactly a positive piece of news for the many fans hoping to see these two fan favorites throw down as soon as this summer. How could they not?
We’ll see what happens. The infamous Irishman has hinted at a new chapter of his career about to begin. That new chapter may not begin with “Cowboy,” but there are always a host of interesting opponents for the UFC’s biggest superstar.
