Glory 9 went down last night in New York, where MMA hopeful and kickboxing beast Tyrone Spong beat three top guys to win the 16-man tourney. He toppled the #1,#2 and #4 promotional ranked kick boxers en route to winning the lot, including a nice $200,000 paycheck.
Spong made short work of Danyo Ilunga in the tournament final, knocking him out in just 16 seconds. In the semi finals, Spong scored a UD win over Filip Verlinden, but was almost knocked out in the quarterfinals. Dutchman Michael Duut landed a nasty right hand that crumpled Spong. ‘The King Of The Ring’ answered quickly, scoring a savage right hand knockout as soon as he got up.
Blackzilian team mate Rashad Evans appeared as one of Spong’s corner men, and Spong’s long awaited return to MMA is just around the corner. He will face Angel DeAnda at WSOF 4 in August, he last fought in MMA in November last year. His debut, at WSOF 1, was a brutal knockout win over Travis Bartlett.
I’d be interested to see what Spong has to offer against some higher level fighters, who knows, maybe Bellator or the UFC will be interested if he can make the transition with relative ease. He has knockout power and a killer instinct, and plenty of credentials to prove it.
Any bets on where Spong will be in a year, if he really commits to MMA?
