Urijah Faber responds to Dominick Cruz's injury, wants Renan Barao as a replacement
Posted on May 7, 2012, 11:19 PM by Mike DrahotaEarlier today, news broke that Dominick Cruz tore his ACL training for his UFC 148 title bout versus arch-nemesis Urijah Faber. Instantly, the status of UFC 148 as potentially the biggest card ever was in jeopardy. While the event no longer features two title fights, it appears that Urijah Faber does still want to fight on the card, revealing the following via Twitter.com:
Sucks about @thedomin8r hope recovers fast! Sounds like 9 months aftr surgery @renanbaraoufc seems like the best replacement! @danawhite

As tension with Cruz was building during their stint as coaches on TUF, Faber now finds himself without a fight this summer. Faber apparently has a preferred match-up in Renan Barao, a Bantamweight on an absolute tear as of late. Barao has recently bested Brad Pickett and Scott Jorgensen in the UFC. He is unbeaten in 29 straight fights, having only lost in his MMA debut. He is a training partner of dangerous UFC Featherweight champion Jose Aldo. Barao, a submission whiz, was set to face Ivan Menjivar for the rumored number-one contender spot.
Always the professional, Faber wished his enemy a speedy recovery regardless of their much-publicized rivalry. How badly will this damage he legacy of UFC 148? A bout with Urijah Faber fighting Renan Barao may be a great fight, but does not bring nearly the amount of name recognition as The Ultimate Fighter coaches matching up after a season of hype. Faber will have to wait to avenge his UFC title loss to Cruz, does he deserve to fight for an interim title in the meantime?

Wow, lot of respect to Faber for picking out Barao.
If Barao wont fight (Though Im sure he will jump at the chance) then Michael Mcdonald should fight Faber.
I agree bro. Not a Faber fan, but definitely have a new found respect for him because it is so rare that guys do this. Mcdonald is a savage, but since he's so young i rather see him fight a bit more, especially against a strong wrestler, a guy like TJ Dillishaw comes to mind. I'd say Jorgenson but he's coming off a loss.
You guys talk as if you didnt respect Faber before, it takes one tweet, and now you respect the guy, either you respected he before or you didnt. Your opinion on someone shouldnt be swayed by one action such as this. Im not singling out you guys, I have seen in many post people say that either they have lost all respect for some one, or they gained a bunch of respect for someone from a quote or a headline. I think its ridiculous and the definition of a fair weather fan.
A lot of fair weather fans these days and not just in this sport unfortunately.
Come on man don't hate. These so-called "fair weather fans" are the same people who make this sport what it is today. Stop stereotyping everything and start appreciating. Just enjoy, jeeeez!
Settle down there David, no need to get all antsy for no reason......
I respect all MMA fighters for getting in there, I may dislike some of them but I respect them(though I will still point out the negative things about them) but at the end of the day I respect them.....just not enough to not say SOME negative things about them. (99% of fans are like this)
Theres MMA fighters who would try to wait and I respect their decision to wait since they earned it. But I respect even more so if they choose to fight because that means they have that much confidence in their abilities or just want to test themselves.
Respect is infinite, Theres room for more respect for the most respectable guy in the world.
Comprende?
Fairweather fan? They aren't saying they went from viscious hate to madly in love. They're just saying they are seeing a side of Faber they didn't know and that they can learn and change. Thats a good thing.
Don't make a big deal out of the word 'respect'. I have a level of respect for all fighters, as fighters. Just as I have a different level of respect for soldiers/military personnel or any other professional I feel directly affects me and demands appreciation. What I meant is I like him a little more as person, or he is a bit cooler in my book now. Fans don't really know what the fighters are like personally, but we get a sense of their character from how they act and what they say. Fabers comments reflect a part of his character that I respect.
I said guys that it wasnt directed at you 2 personally, it was directed at the accumulation of comments that are along those lines, that happen in many post.
@David
But our comments triggered you to say what you said.
Of course you think/thought we were "fair weather" fans.
Why else would you bring up the topic??
If it did come to my mind randomly, you'd probably just say your gripe on the public wall
Yeah ! He is a warrior not willing to wait , and take the risk to eventually lose ,and lose the opportunity for a title shot.
Faber really believe he is the best ,so he would fight anyone unlike Nate Diaz ,Hendricks or Condit who prefer to wait because they are affraid to lose the opportunity.
McDonald would be my second pick after Barao to replace but McDonald is just coming off a fight and Barao has been training for this card for a full camp so while McDonald would be good, Barao replacing makes 10x more sense.
I hope Faber will win because he deserves it. Big Respect
Faber isnt worried M1, he can sneeze and get another title shot now days. UNLIKE the other guys you hate on. They've been trying to get a shot forever.
Great move by faber shows his conficence and a spirit of a champion. However Renan Barao is a really hard fighter to go through. Really hard fight to pick but I'll go with Faber.
Yeah, Faber handled that with more class than I expected.
I thought it was to soon for him to fight Cruz again, but it's a shame it went down like this.
Faber is a real man. I respect this guys fearless attitude and his warrior spirit is always showcased in every fight.
I think since this injury will take Cruz out for a while why not make it an interim title fight? I mean really it's a win win for everyone. Win for Faber he has a chance to be come champ, a win for Barao for the reward of going on a tear, win for the UFC bantamweight division since they will have a champ to go after, win for Cruz cause he keeps his title and a win for the UFC when Cruz comes back to unify the title.
they try to avoid interim titles unless i is a huge layoff (usually +1year) like the GSP situation the now where it will have ben about 16 months since he fought.
It will be over 12 months until we see Cruz back in the cage, I think a interim title would work here, esp in a young division in the UFC
yea, I agree, don't see many other options with that time gap.
I said as soon as this injury happened this would be a good call (not that it wasn;t obvious) but I hope it happens, it would be a great fight!
Also, I agree with everyone else here, this shows how much confidence in himself Faber has and I don't think anyone wouldn't find themselves respecting him even more now.
Faber = Warrior
That Faber is a sly one, mental warfare. Pissed off Cruz so bad, he trained hard enough to blow his knee out. Be nice to Barao we need a fight to end out TUF. How ironic is it Cruz was pushing his teammate with the hurt knee? Karma is a bitch.
barao will win
Respect!
Too bad he didn't call out Joseph Benavidez.
not sure if u know or not but pretty sure their training partners so im assuming thats why he didnt call him out ontop of now that hes in the flyweight division
I was making a joke cause I know they're partners. I had however, forgotten about the weight class move by JB.
