Molly McCann had some extra added pressure when she walked to the cage to meet Priscila Cachoeira on the preliminary card of today’s (Sat., March 16, 2019) UFC on ESPN+ 5 from the O2 Arena in London, England.
McCann lost her UFC debut to Gillian Robertson at last year’s UFC Liverpool. She got another shot a year later, and she took advantage of it. However, it wasn’t without some extreme adversity. ‘Meatball’ was blasted by a huge right hand from Cachoeira that immediately caused her eye to swell up to immense proportions.
That was far from enough to make her quit, though. Look at the injury courtesy of the UFC:
Despite the gruesome injury, McCann won the fight by unanimous decision. She knew it apparently, as she jumped over the cage in elation:
In her post-fight interview with Dan Hardy, McCann’s eye swelled even further to the point where she couldn’t see. She clearly had a broken orbital bone from the gritty victory:
With the win, the UFC noted McCann had made history by becoming the first English woman to win in the world’s leading MMA promotion:
