On this day in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the former bodyguard of Jeffrey Epstein suffered a lightning-quick loss to a legendary UFC champion who had a public beef with Dana White. The combatants in question are Frank Shamrock and Igor Zinoviev, with the former having a divisive relationship with White while the latter was involved with Epstein.

On Friday, March 13th, 1998, UFC 16: Battle in the Bayou transpired at Pontchartrain Center in Kenner, Louisiana with Shamrock defending his crown against Zinoviev in the night’s headliner. Defending what was then known as the middleweight strap but is recognized historically as the light heavyweight title, Shamrock notched an emphatic defense and did so in less than thirty seconds.

A crushing slam turned out the lights on Zinoviev with a broken collarbone occurring taking place during the explosive exchange. After some follow-up ground and pound punches connected, the referee waved off the action twenty-two seconds in, declaring Frank Shamrock the victor and still UFC champion.

After his bid for UFC championship glory fell short and following the devastating nature of his defeat to Shamrock involving the injury sustained within, the sambo and judo specialist hung up his gloves. Zinoviev then spent the early 2000’s navigating the world of private security. For around half a decade, Zinoviev served as the bodyguard, as well as the driver, among multiple roles for the disgraced mass criminal.

Several victims have previously identified Zinoviev as a part of Epstein’s staff, and relating to the serial sexual predator, the former fighter posited that the cause of death wasn’t accurately portrayed publicly. Zinoviev mentioned this during a 2019 interview that took place with New York Post, as the former MMA fighter quipped,

“Somebody helped him to do that. That’s going a little too deep.”

Zinoviev claimed to have never seen Epstein with underage girls in an interview with the MMA History Podcast from 2024. The controversial combatant was never charged criminally in relation to his connection to the predatory financier.
