MMA Title Fight in Abu Dhabi Scrapped Over Middle East Safety Concerns

Former ONE Championship MMA veteran Reece McLaren has pulled out of his scheduled UAE Warriors bantamweight title bout against champion Asaf Chopurov, set for Saturday, March 28 at the ADNEC Centre in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi. McLaren and his team cited safety concerns linked to the expanding conflict in the Middle East, including the risk of travel disruptions and the possibility of being stranded in the region if fighting continued.

Why the bout was cancelled

The MMA fight was announced last week as the main event of UAE Warriors 69, where Chopurov (9–0) was set to defend his bantamweight belt against McLaren (19–9), a veteran with extensive experience in flyweight and bantamweight divisions. McLaren and his team highlighted recent government‑level travel warnings across multiple Western countries, as well as the closure or rerouting of key Middle East air corridors, as key factors in their decision. With the UK Foreign Office and other governments advising against non‑essential travel to parts of the Gulf, including the United Arab Emirates, the move reflects a growing risk pool for athletes and support staff.

“Over the last few weeks we have been monitoring the situation in the Middle East and working closely with management and the team at UAE Warriors to assess the safety for us to travel to compete. Despite Reece wanting to commit to this fight, we felt that the risks to our safety were too high, and the potential of us getting stuck in the Middle East were the ultimate reasons for our decision to pull Reece out.”

Context of the Middle East conflict

The conflict has deepened over the past six weeks, with Israel and the United States launching strikes against Iran in late February, followed by Iranian counter‑attacks on infrastructure and military or dual‑use sites in several Gulf states.

Commercial and scheduled flights into and out of hubs such as Dubai, Doha, Tel Aviv and Amman have been repeatedly cancelled or rerouted, while airspace in several countries has been partially closed. These disruptions increase the chance that an athlete flying into the region could face indefinite delays or be unable to leave on short notice, which fighters and camps treat as a serious operational risk.

Impact on UAE Warriors and the promotion

UAE Warriors has already committed to two events in late March, UAE Warriors 68 on March 27 and UAE Warriors 69 on March 28, both planned as part of an effort to maintain the promotion’s profile in Abu Dhabi despite the regional tensions. The withdrawal of the title‑main event leaves the promotion with limited time to find a replacement challenger for Chopurov, who claimed the bantamweight strap at UAE Warriors 64 by finishing Demarte Pena in Abu Dhabi.

While the light‑heavyweight title bout between UFC veteran Caio Machado and former titleholder Magomed Tuchalov remains on the card, the loss of the McLaren‑Chopurov match removes a high‑profile matchup for international broadcasters.

DOW Futures Today

The same conflict that underpins McLaren’s safety concerns is also feeding volatility in global financial markets. Front‑month DOW futures this week have traded in a tight defensive band, with traders balancing expectations of higher energy‑cost inflation against hopes for a contained military escalation. Any major spike in oil prices or disruption to Gulf shipping lanes typically triggers quick repricings in equity index futures, as investors reassess risk across multiple sectors.

At the same time, the conflict has become a live talking point in US domestic politics, with President Donald Trump’s “TACO”‑style sound‑bite rhetoric on Middle East policy drawing attention on social media and cable news. The term “TACO Trump” has trended alongside clips of Trump defending targeted‑strike doctrine and trade‑linked tariffs framed as leverage over Iran‑aligned governments.

Having transitioned from flyweight to bantamweight after a long run in ONE Championship, McLaren had positioned the UAE Warriors shot as a springboard toward a UFC call‑up later this year. With the fight cancelled, he may need to eye alternate title‑level opportunities in Europe or Asia, where the security and transport environment looks more stable in the short term.

For the bantamweight division, the immediate priority is whether UAE Warriors can still book a credible challenger for Chopurov before the event.
