Kamaru Usman reiterates desire to challenge Islam Makhachev for UFC welterweight title

UFC legend Kamaru Usman has once again made it crystal clear that he wants to pursue a title fight against Islam Makhachev.

Right now, Islam Makhachev is the UFC welterweight champion. A few years back, however, Kamaru Usman was the king at 170 pounds, and will forever be remembered as one of the most impressive (and important) champions in the division’s history.

After his recent win over Joaquin Buckley, Kamaru Usman made it known that he wants one more shot at becoming a world champion in the welterweight division. Of course, that would mean going up against Islam Makhachev, who he has had a close relationship with over the years due to their mutual association with Ali Abdelaziz.

In a recent interview, Kamaru Usman had the following to say about the possible superfight.

Kamaru Usman on wanting to face Islam Makhachev

“It’s not a secret how I feel about Islam, I like Islam. I think he’s a great, great champion, but I also feel like I am the best test in the division for him. It’s almost kind of weird and surreal that I’m having to sell myself on my skill level and on who I am and what I’ve done in this sport.

“It’s a little weird, but that’s the name of the game right now. It’s what have you done for me lately. So, hopefully the UFC sees that and give me that opportunity for me to go out there and show them once again that I am still the best in the world.”

‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ is an incredible fighter and has done some great things throughout the course of his career. Alas, if he wants to go up against someone like Makhachev, he will need to put in the performance of a lifetime in order to pick up the win.
