“I’m a big reason the 125 pound division exists”: Dominick Cruz to Demetrious Johnson

Having fought one another at UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson back in 2011, which resulted in a decision win for Dominick Cruz, the topic of the flyweight division came up while Mighty Mouse and Cruz were discussing the legacy of historic champions in the UFC.

Dominick Cruz had this to say:
“There’s always a new champion, and guess what? The champions they’re talking about now—they’re going to forget about them just as fast as they forgot about me, you (Demetrious Johnson), Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, and BJ Penn. All these guys that I grew up watching, that you thought would never be forgotten—nobody talks about them.”

Johnson replied, “I don’t think they’re going to forget about you.:

Dominick Cruz continued:
“History will make itself, and things will be talked about if they matter. Hopefully—I think our fight (referring to his fight with Demetrious Johnson) will be something that matters forever, because you went down to 125 after that fight and dominated forever. I think I’m a big reason the 125-pound weight class exists.”

With an immediate reply from Mighty Mouse Johnson:
“Absolutely.”

Johnson further elaborated:
“Because you beat all of us. You beat me, you beat Joseph (Benavidez) twice, Faber twice, beat Scott Jorgensen, who went down to 125.”

“He was top five when I beat him,” replied Cruz.

Johnson then says in a joking manner, “God bless Dominick – he made our division! Thank you, Dom, thank you,” while bowing his hands to him across the table.

Dominick Cruz responds, “That’s what I would’ve said then. God bless me. But then you lost to me — and what did you do? I lost to Faber — and what did I do? These are the adjustments that make the sport what it is.”

Listening to these two former greats of combat speak so candidly about their rise and where the sport stands today is truly enlightening.
