Bellator NYC Results: Chael Sonnen Shuts Out Wanderlei Silva On Scorecards

It’s once again fight day here at LowKickMMA, and the talent on display tonight (Saturday, June 24th, 2017) will come in the form of Bellator NYC. Headlining the card are Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva, but there’s a whole bunch of great fights also taking place on the rest of the main card.

Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva meet in a light heavyweight bout in the main event. In round one, Sonnen shot for a double leg right out of the gate and got it. Sonnen now in full guard and starts landing strikes. Silva explodes back up to his feet, but Sonnen is on him. They split apart and reset. Silva dropped Sonnen with a right hand with two minutes to go and got guard. Sonnen kicks him off and scores a takedown and wins up in half guard. Sonnen lands some elbows to close out the round.  In round two, they explode out of the corners and swing for the fences.

Both men get clipped but Sonnen thinks twice and takes Silva down. Silva wraps up a guillotine and he is squeezing hard, but Sonnen stayed calm. Silva held onto the choke for what seemed like forever until John McCarthy stood them up. Sonnen immediately took him down and scored a double leg takedown halfway through the round. Sonnen chipping away with strikes from top position to end the round.

In round three, Silva threw some wild shots to begin the round, which left the door open for Sonnen to score yet another takedown. Sonnen works his way into half guard as he continues to dish out strikes from top position. Sonnen was able to get full mount near the end of the round. Sonnen stayed on top to end the fight. The judges gave Sonnen the unanimous decision win.  

Neiman Gracie vs. Dave Marfone is next in a welterweight bout. This was supposed to be featured on the main card of Bellator 180 but was pushed to Bellator NYC due restraints during the Bellator 180 broadcast. In round one, Gracie changes levels and scores a textbook double-leg takedown. He’s all over Marfone. Marfone gets back to his feet, but Gracie has his tied up against the cage.

Gracie went in for a double, and Marfone was so low he got head-butted to the mat. Gracie just teeing off on Marfone there. Marfone not doing much standing. Marfone locks in a guillotine at the bell and runs out of time. In round two, After a clinch against the cage, Gracie takes his back and drags him to the canvas. Gracie on Marfone’s back. marfone chooses to front flip onto Gracie’s face. Gracie still on him and locked in the rear-naked choke for the win.

Fedor Emelianenko and Matt Mitrione met in a heavyweight bout. In round one, they both blasted each other and are hurt. Both fell to the ground. Mitrione got back to his feet first and finished Emelianenko with strikes on the ground. It was almost a double KO, but Mitrione was able to recover first to earn the win.

Michael Chandler vs. Brett Primus was next in a lightweight title bout. In the first round, Chandler pressured him early while Primus was looking to counter kick. Primus kicked him, and Chandler fell. Chandler got back to his feet, but his left knee was hurting him badly. Primus all over him with kicks as Chandler tries to keep composure. Chandler rocks Primus with a right hook, but Chandler stumbles again. His left ankle was ruined. The referee calls time, and the doctor checked on him, and the fight was called. Primus is the new lightweight champion.

Aaron Pico vs. Zach Freeman was next in a lightweight bout. Pico eats a knee to start his MMA career and gets dropped hard with a hook. Freeman locked in the guillotine choke for the win.

Opening the main card on PPV was Douglas Lima vs. Lorenz Larkin in a welterweight championship bout. In round one, they had a feeling out process while throwing some leg kicks to start this one off. Larkin fires off a left-right to the head, but they graze Lima. Larkin was getting a lot more chances to pressure, but neither guy landing much clean. Lima with an uppercut as Larkin backed into the cage and they end the round in the clinch.

In round two, Larkin started to let his hands to and mixed up his strikes. Lima was getting very close to landing some of his bombs. He was inches away every time. He was bleeding from his nose though. Larkin clubs Lima with a right hand in an exchange but Lima backs off and fires back with a left hook that floors Larkin. Lima got full guard and landed some strikes before Larkin got back to his feet.

In round three, both guys calmed down and caught their breath. Not a ton of action as the fans started to become restless. Larkin was moving well, but he’s not letting his hands go at all. Lima was pressing forward but can’t get close to land anything.

In round four, Larkin turned up the pressure and found better angles to attack from. Lima missed a leg kick, and Larkin made him pay by landing some good shots. Lima continued to struggle with his range and Larkin is just counter striking him out of the cage. Lima tripped him and got guard. Lima got half guard, but Larkin was able to get back to his feet to end the round.

In the fifth round, Larkin scored with a nice body uppercut as Lima backed himself against the cage. Lima with a straight right to the body. Larkin with a jump spinning back kick to the midsection. Lima lands a sharp left hook, which leads to a brief exchange. They had a wild exchange to end the round. In the end, the judges gave the win to Lima by decision. Lima is still the Bellator welterweight champion.
