Alexander Volkanovski or Ilia Topuria: who is feathweight GOAT? Robert Whittaker reveals his pick
UFC legend Robert Whittaker has given his thoughts on who the greatest featherweight of all time is, with Alexander Volkanovski and Ilia Topuria at the top of the list.
Tonight, Alexander Volkanovski will collide with Diego Lopes with the UFC featherweight championship being on the line. While many believe that Volk will be able to do enough to get the win, as he did in their first meeting, there’s no denying that Lopes’ power serves as a real threat – which we saw when he dropped ‘The Great’ last year.
Beyond that, though, Alexander Volkanovski is looking to further his case for being the greatest featherweight in the history of the UFC, and perhaps all of mixed martial arts. He’s certainly in the twilight of his career at this point but if he continues to pick up impressive wins, it’s going to be hard to deny him at the top of that mountain.
In a recent appearance, Robert Whittaker gave his thoughts on both Alexander Volkanovski and the insanely talented former featherweight champ Ilia Topuria.
Robert Whittaker on Alexander Volkanovski/Ilia Topuria debate
“I feel like he has to be at the top of my list, almost at the very tippy top, because of the work he did,” Whittaker said of Topuria during the UFC 325 morning weigh-in show. “I understand that, but he dismantled great after great and then moved up a weight class and dismantled another great. I feel like you can’t disregard that.
“I feel like you can’t disregard the fact that he knocked out Volk and Max. Volk is at the top of my list because it’s Volk. He has ran that division since day dot, and it’s Volk. I’m biased. Volk is my No. 1, Ilia is my No. 2. Volk and Max were the boogeymen of that division. They were running through people, fights weren’t close until they fought each other and then Ilia dismantled both of them.”
