When news broke last night that former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans had injured his knee and was out of his UFC 170 co-main event against Daniel Cormier, talk immediately shifted to the UFC trying to get the bout rescheduled for UFC 172 in April.

However, news soon followed that Cormier was looking for an opponent for the February 22 card in Las Vegas. While he eventually got an obscure replacement in former training partner and NCAA Division I All-American wrestler Patrick Cummins, a new development has arisen that may explain Cormier’s insistence on fighting.

Speaking on his twitter account, Dave Farra of CBS Radio revealed that Dana White told him Evans’ knee injury may take a lot longer to heal than the four weeks that was initially reported:

It sounds like “Suga” may have some ligament damage to deal with, but no official word has been released on the former champ’s official status. While the severity of his injury is unconfirmed, it would make some sense of Cormier’s puzzling decision to fight an unknown opponent rather than wait slightly under two months to face a huge name in Evans.

If that is the case, it’s an extremely unfortunate situation for “Suga,” who recently got off a two-fight snide by defeating Dan Henderson and Chael Sonnen in 2013. He was poised to make another run at a UFC title shot with a win over former Olympian Cormier; now it is unknown if the two will ever do battle.

Here’s hoping that Evans’ knee injury isn’t as serious as reported and he can return to the Octagon sooner than later. Keep your eyes on Lowkick for any rising developments as they occur.
