Welterweight striker Thiago Alves suffered a brutal broken nose (watch it unfold above) from the vicious elbows of ‘The Natural Born Killer’ Carlos Condit in the main event of UFC Fight Night 67 last night (Sat., May 30, 2015) from the Goiania Arena in Goiania, Brazil.

The loss snapped his two-fight win streak after a return from two major surgeries, putting the former title contender a bit further back in the stacked welterweight talent pool. Although he wanted to continue fighting into the third round, the cage-side doctors deemed that an unwise decision, and today we’ve found out just why.

According to a report from MMA Fighting’s Guilherme Cruz, Dr. Marcio Tannure, the director of the Brazilian athletic commission for MMA (CABMMA), informed him that Alves will most likely have to undergo surgery to fully repair his nose.

It’s a disappointing setback for Alves, who fought like the true warrior that he is. ‘The Pitbull’ posted a picture of his battle marks and this message for his loyal fans on Instagram today:

“Unfortunately it wasn’t my night. But that’s how it is at the highest level of competition. A small setback is a great setup for a bigger comeback! I’ll learn from my mistakes and get a lot better. I won’t stop until I have that belt around my waist! Now back to the grind. Just wanna first thank God for blessing with this life. And a massive THANK YOU to all my fans for the support. And @ufc for this opportunity. I will be back!!!”

It’s an unfortunate circumstance for the once-elite Alves, who showed a ton of heart to return from the devastating setbacks he’s experienced during the frustrating past few years. He’s now faced with another mountain to climb, but one thing is for sure: Alves won’t give up.
