UFC Fight Night 100’s second main card bout featured two 170-pounders in search of a spot in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight rankings. Warlley Alves (10-2) and Kamaru Usman (9-1) were the two competitors who met inside the Octagon.
Despite early success, Alves would find himself on the receiving end of a beatdown at the hands of “The Nigerian Nightmare.”
Alves went low with a kick, but it was parried. Usman was countered with a right hand. A one-two combination found the mark for Alves. Usman cut off Alves a few times, but couldn’t do any damage. Alves landed a right hand and he followed it up with a counter left hand. The back of Alves kept finding the fence, but Usman didn’t take advantage. The two had an exchange near the end of the round which saw Alves land a knee and Usman return fire with some hard punches.
Blood trickled down the nose of Alves early in the second frame. Alves threatened with a guillotine and was able to break free from the clinch. “The Nigerian Nightmare” pressured his opponent against the fence and used it to setup strikes. Usman connected with a hard right hand and taunted his adversary. Alves continued to back up against the fence. Usman cracked Alves with a left hook. Alves landed a knee to the body, but Usman continued talking trash. Usman mouthed off some more after the round.
Right away, Usman moved forward aggressively. A counter left from Alves found the target. The hard-hitting Usman landed a right hand. A barrage of strikes from “The Nigerian Nightmare” found the mark and he completed a takedown. Alves caught his opponent in a guillotine choke. Usman slipped out and rained down strikes in full guard. He moved to side control and landed some elbows in a crucifix. “The Nigerian Nightmare” went for an arm triangle. Alves survived the round, but the result was quite obvious.
After Usman was announced as the winner, he called out top welterweight contender Demian Maia. Usman said, “I’ll tell you one thing, you set that up Dana, I’m putting him away in the first round.”
Final Result: Kamaru Usman def. Warlley Alves via unanimous decision (29-27, 30-26, 29-28)
