WATCH: Kai Asakura Erases Octagon Nightmare With Highlight-Reel Knockout Of Cameron Smotherman At UFC Macau
Kai Asakura finally delivered the performance UFC fans had been waiting for.
Making his bantamweight debut after a difficult start to life inside the Octagon, the former RIZIN star needed less than two minutes to dispatch Cameron Smotherman on Saturday at UFC Macau.
Asakura entered the contest searching for his first UFC victory following back-to-back submission losses to former flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 310 and veteran contender Tim Elliott at UFC 319. The move up to 135 pounds immediately appeared to suit him.
From the opening bell, the Japanese standout looked fast, powerful, and completely at ease. He opened with a series of punishing leg kicks before mixing in sharp boxing combinations that repeatedly forced Smotherman onto the defensive.
The pressure began to pay dividends quickly.
A crisp right hand stunned the American and left him struggling to regain his footing. Sensing the finish was near, Kai Asakura surged forward and trapped Smotherman along the fence before uncorking a devastating left hook that sent his opponent crashing to the canvas.
Few follow-up strikes were all that was needed before the referee stepped in to halt the contest at the 1:50 mark of the opening round.
With the win, Kai Asakura improves his professional record to 22-6. The first-round stoppage was his 17th career finish and could mark the beginning of a new chapter in the Octagon.
