Justin Gaethje Does Not Care if He Defeats Ilia Topuria by Knockout or Decision

Justin Gaethje, Ilia Topuria

Justin Gaethje has a message for his future opponent, Ilia Topuria.

Earlier this year at UFC 324, Gaethje dismantled Paddy Pimblett for five rounds and grabbed the interim lightweight championship for the second time in his career.

‘The Highlight’ will now be facing champion Ilia Topuria later this year in a title unification bout. This fight is rumored to happen on June 14, when the promotion heads to the South Lawn of the White House.

In a recent interview with Helen Yee Sports, the 37-year-old was asked to weigh in on how he visualizes this year playing out for himself, especially after starting it on such a high note. Gaethje said:

“I hope I fight in June and get a win versus Ilia, and then we’ll see from there.”

When asked if he will hunt for a knockout against Topuria or play it safe by fighting for all five rounds and then await the judges’ decision, ‘The Highlight’ added:

“I’m always trying to knock everybody out. But I just will fight my best and hardest.”

Topuria had taken a break from fighting due to personal reasons. However, most recently, he had his problems outside the octagon sorted out. He’s now back on track and has resumed training.

‘El Matador’ has already warned Gaethje. Right after UFC 324, the lightweight champion posted on X:

“Justin, all I can say is congratulations… and I’d like to tell you to get ready, but you’re screwed no matter what.”

Justin Gaethje plans to retire by mid-2027

During a recent sit-down with Zach Gelb, Justin Gaethje discussed his retirement plans. If things go Gaethje’s way, and he manages to dethrone Ilia Topuria this year, he plans to defend his belt a couple of times and then say farewell to the game by mid-2027.

“I think by mid-2027, I’ll be 100% done.”

Gaethje also added that he may even consider retirement if he gets slept by the Georgian-Spaniard.
