Chris Weidman: Nobody In This Division Beats Me

UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman has made a habit of going against the grain in his MMA career. He captured the title from the heavy favorite Anderson Silva at UFC 162, becoming the first man to beat and knock out the previously dominant ‘Spider’.

After winning by TKO in the rematch at UFC 168 due to Silva’s injury, ‘The All-American’ defeated Lyoto Machida in a hard fought war at UFC 175. Now set to face yet another Brazilian foe at UFC 187, in Vitor Belfort, Weidman says that neither ‘The Phenom’, or anyone else, will hand him his first loss.

“Many talented Brazilians in my division, but it doesn’t matter if it’s a Brazilian, American, or Russian. I have my goals and that’s what I’ll get and maintain. I’m very excited for this fight, very motivated for my family and the fans. I’ll have a tough guy in front of me that wants to win, but he doesn’t want it more than me. He will not catch me, no one will beat me in this division. Until I’m ready to retire, no one beats me.”

A brash declaration by the 12-0 Serra-Longo product, who recently graduated to a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under John Danaher. With top contenders like Yoel Romero, Jacare Souza and Luke Rockhold in the waiting, let alone Belfort, it’s clear that the champ is supremely confident right now.

UFC 187 goes down on May 23rd from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The headlining action is the light-heavyweight title tilt between Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson, making the event easily the most stacked of the year, even after the loss of Jon Jones and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Not many thought that Chris Weidman had what it took to defeat the seemingly untouchable Anderson Silva, but he silenced critics with a firm left hook. Now can he live up to this other-worldly statement, or is he setting himself up for an epic fall at UFC 187?
