Cam Nelson Makes History with Big UFC Signing, NTT Teammate/ PFL Fighter Aaron Jeffery Gives Thoughts
Cam Nelson is one of the most promising, surging prospects on the Canadian MMA scene, and he now prepares to showcase his skills on a global level. The 28-year-old has been mapping out making history in the UFC for years now, and Nelson gets a chance at doing just that at UFC Shanghai against Ding Meng on August 29th.
During an interview with me prior to this UFC bout agreement being publicly confirmed, when Cam Nelson was just on the heels of winning his first professional MMA title under the Fight League Atlantic banner. When discussing the broader goals that he wants to actualize into reality within this sport, which includes accomplishing an unprecedented feat, Cam Nelson said [via MMA Canada],
“Yeah. I mean obviously I think every fighter who is serious about the sport and the game and their career, they want to get to the UFC. Obviously that’s the NHL of combat sports and it’s the pinnacle of the sport. I’ve trained [at] Niagara Top Team a lot now to do big portions of my camp up there. You see Mike [Malott] and Jasmine [Jasudavicius] and Cody Chovancek. These guys and girls who have gone through the regional scenes. Clawed their way to the top and it just reminds you that this is an attainable goal.”
“Especially now I’m seven and one as a professional. I’m on a five-fight win streak, three-fight finish streak. So it’s more real now than ever. So yeah, that’s obviously the goal now. There’s never been an Island born fighter, a Prince Edward Island born fighter in the UFC. So that has quietly been my goal for the last few years. As I progress through my pro career and with each fight it becomes, like I said, more realistic. So now more than ever just looking to keep the foot on the gas and get there.”
Cam Nelson’s UFC Path Touched on By Victorious PFL Charlotte Teammate
While Nelson touts the skills he has built at Renzo Gracie PEI, his work at Niagara Top Team with high-level fighters like Aaron Jeffery has clearly paid dividends. Niagara Top Team boasts established UFC names like the aforementioned Mike Malott and Jasmine Jasudavicius, there are surging NTT talents like Clayton Pye and Cam Nelson garnered mentions as standouts in the training room from Jeffery.
Aaron Jeffery is a former BTC as well as CFFC champ with deep Bellator MMA experience coming off a victory via unanimous decision over Josh Silveira at PFL Charlotte earlier this month. When touching on Nelson’s FLA title win and desire to make UFC history for PEI (pre-UFC Shanghai bout announcement), Jeffery stated [via MMA Canada],
“It’s great. Yeah, Cam’s a good dude. He’s a very good fighter and a very good person. We love it when he comes up here and yeah, I think he’s ready for that next step, too. I don’t know what he is like seven and one. Like a couple big knockouts in the FLA his last two fights and now he has a pro title. So yeah, I think he’s ready for the next step.”
