In a surprising choice of new opponent, a British flyweight has made a big statement stepping up to face Brandon Moreno in Mexico.
UFC are due to return to Mexico at the end of February and the original headliner was a flyweight bout between former champion Brandon Moreno and top contender Asu Almabayev. As the best Mexican representative in the UFC it is vital Moreno not only features on the card but headlines it.

The budding Kazakh is 6-1 in the UFC and this was an opportunity against his toughest opponent yet. However, 2 days prior to his flight out to Mexico he suffered a hand injury and has been forced to withdraw. After a career best victory last time out against Alex Perez the disappointment is huge for Almabayev particularly as there are many contenders eyeing title shots in the division.
Brandon Moreno vs Lone’er Kavanagh
British flyweight prospect Lone’er Kavanagh was scheduled for a bout against Bruno Silva at the Meta Apex in March as he aims to bounce back from his first career defeat in August last year. At 9-0 he was matched against Charles Johnson, a notoriously tough litmus test for upcoming flyweights and suffered a rough TKO loss. Many believed he would return at UFC London but his original bout was slated for the week prior.

Now the number 15 ranked flyweight steps up in a massive opportunity to get back into the win column against a long standing legend of the flyweight division. Two time champion Brandon Moreno is never in a boring fight and his quadrilogy with Deiveson Figueiredo will forever be remembered in UFC history. The former champion suffered defeat in December in an eliminator against Tatsuro Taira, another rising star destined for UFC gold.

Yet to be officially confirmed by the UFC fans can expect an announcement imminently. The opportunity comes as a surprise for the Brit and some fans question why he has the chance coming off a loss. Potentially he is then only man to have said yes to the short notice main event.
