Aljamain Sterling compares Tom Aspinall backlash to his title win over Petr Yan
Former UFC champion Aljamain Sterling has compared the backlash Tom Aspinall is receiving to what he endured after his title win over Petr Yan.
As we know, Aljamain Sterling was once the bantamweight champion in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. However, his reign started in controversial circumstances, after he won the title from Petr Yan following an illegal knee. While Yan took years to recover from the setback, ‘Funk Master’ went on to have a fairly solid reign with the belt.
However, the negative side of that for Aljamain Sterling was that he was on the end of a lot of criticism, with many believing he played up the extent of the injury in order to claim the title in a fight that a lot of people felt like he was losing.
In a recent series of tweets, Aljamain Sterling compared his situation to what Tom Aspinall is currently going through with Ciryl Gane.
Aljamain Sterling on Tom Aspinall comparisons
“Then you’re just as slow as the rest of them if you can’t listen and see the double edge sword of this mma game. Damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Better yet, I should blast you in the head with a knee you DONT see, then ask you “can you continue?” Let’s see how you and all the dumb tough guys respond and react.
“Maybe then you can see how living thru that s****y moment and the expectations of how ppl think fighters are invincible, why I phrased this take this way. ONLY TOM knew how hurt he was. Tom also knows you say those words right away, the fight is stopped. Yea, my take opens up REAL conversation of these stupid ass rules and perceptions of fighters.”
“And I agree 100%. It’s ashame Gane is not in the headlines for the foul as it was for Yan not in the headlines for his fouls. Both Tom and I were perceived the be the “fakes” and “milking” their reactions of their fouls. Til this day I get messages that I cheated Yan and faked it. Crazy”
Aljo isn’t happy.
