Chael Sonnen’s Next Opponent? Rashad Evans In The Co-Main Event of UFC 167

After his impressive victory over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC Fight Night 26 from Boston, Chael Sonnen was rumored to have several potential opponents for his next bout. While rumors included Vitor Belfort, Lyoto Machida, and of course Wanderlei Silva, it appears that Sonnen will have a much different opponent altogether.

And that opponent is former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Rashad Evans, whom Sonnen will be facing as the co-main event of the November 17th UFC 167 from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. “The American Gangster” revealed the juicy fight announcement on this afternoon’s UFC Fight Night 28 Pre-Show:

“The most well-dressed man, future Hall of Famer, former world champion Rashad Evans – he will be fighting on November 16 against the man with the biggest arms, the greatest charms and does all the harm. You simply know him as Chael P.”

The blockbuster matchup could possibly turn out to be one of the biggest all-out trash talk wars ever seen in the UFC, but Evans has seemed to be a rather quiet version of himself since his losing effort against UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones at UFC 145 in April 2012.

The No. 5-ranked Evans notched a close split decision win over Former Pride FC champion Dan Henderson at last June’s UFC 161, and looks to continue his ascend back up the 205 lb. ranks. Sonnen found himself in the Top-10 after his win over Shogun, and now sits at No. 9.

This bout has the potential to be a great matchup, and should serve as a great lead-in to the headlining UFC Welterweight title fight between champion Georges St. Pierre and challenger Johny Hendricks. What are your thoughts on Sonnen’s new fight?

  • Good match-up. Chael and Rashad seem pretty cool with each other, but, yeah, I'd like to see some trash talk to help build the fight up. Could be Hilarious.

    I got Chael. P.

    • D

The way I see it, their skills pretty much cancel each out. When that happens, the better athlete wins. That's Evans.

  • Thought Chael was going back to MW, or is Rashad dropping down? Rashad will be tough to beat either way, as his wrestling should cancel out Chael's ground game for the most part. I would be surprised if Chael can keep Rashad down.

    • Well, Chael has been working his submissions. I guess he finally realized it as an important part of the arsenal for a wrestler. Maybe GSP will take notice as well.

      • GSP has sick subs he just doesn't use them. I forget which fight it was (Hughes III?) but he subbed a guy with a very slick arm bar from back mount.

Really bad match up. Rashad is a powerful striker and Chael ***** at striking. If Chael can't keep Rashad down he's done.

    • I'd say Rashad is quicker on the feet, but Chael has some good boxing. I seem to remember him dropping Silva… a couple times.

      • I believe that was Three times.
        .but I could be wrong

        • exactly? people like to remember what they want! Chael is underrated. somebody rewatch his fight!

    • Not that bad of a match up. Foot work and overall athleticism goes to Rashad. Chael likes to rough it up in boxing, moving forward, chin down, hands up, but no head movement and side steps. Both fighters are not that good on their backs, but having said so, Rashad can wall walk better and get back to his feet better than Chael. I'm picking Rashad to win via TKO RD 2.

  • They could be fighting at MW. It would be very interesting.

  • Rashad is a better athlete but doesn't seem to have the same fire that he used to. Chael P out wrestles the wrestler to bring Suga one step closer to retirement.

  • Wonder how the MMA talk shows will go with Chael and Rashad after they fight.

"I tend to disagree Chael"…………."Well no need to argue Rashad , you know I'll win just like when we fought"……fight breaks out instantly on set. 8))

  • Rashad is going to destroy Chael. He has the wrestling to keep it standing and on the feet he will baffle Chael with his foot work and speed. Rashad wins via tko in the second or third round.

  • I got Chael on this one…on paper Suga wins this, but Rashad just seems to freeze during fights, Like him or not, Chael is a monster.

  • Rashad's quick and Jones even had some trouble getting Rashad down and we all saw how he handled Chael. Then again Rashad hasn't been the same since the Jones lost and Chael's bounced right back. Interesting fight for the LHW division. Unless Rashad drops down
