Stephen Thompson Calls Out Former UFC Champion For Next Fight

Stephen Thompson

Stephen Thompson calls out a former UFC champion while preparing for his upcoming fight.

The title contender is slated to meet former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis in the headliner of UFC on ESPN+ 6 (also known as UFC Nashville). While doing media for this bout, Thompson made it known that once he fights Pettis, he would like to share the Octagon with former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler next.

The UFC tried to book this fight back in January for the first event on ESPN, but it didn’t work out.

This is something that could be an issue for Thompson getting done as UFC President Dana White has already confirmed that he’s trying to get Lawler vs. Ben Askren 2 done due to their controversial finish in their previous meeting.

“Lawler is definitely the fight I’ve been wanting for a while,” Thompson told MMA Junkie. “I’ve been a big fan of him, and he’s been such a monster in the welterweight division. I thought he looked great in his last fight with Ben (Askren). He looked really strong and just really focused. I think that year off gave him some time to heal up and get his mind right. I think that would be awesome.”

“I know there’s a card happening in Greenville, S.C., my hometown, three months from now. Hopefully, come out of this fight unscathed, and we’ll make that fight happen.”

UFC on ESPN+ 6  is set to take place on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at the at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. The main card will air on ESPN+ at 8 pm ET. The preliminary card will air on ESPN+ at 5 pm ET.
